I've never been treated so rudely – My family and I have NEVER been treated so rudely. One month ago we had a party fpr 26 there and today 10. While we we're enjoying coffee and visiting our family the manager comes and says, literally, "so are we done here?" We thought he'd check to see how we liked everything. But no! He came to ask us to leave and said "just trying to make a living you know." Then he stood over us as we we're hurried out. This was the first time my family got to meet our new daughter. I am livid and will make sure this is the topic of easter dinner today so no one else gets treated this way or scammed out of $1000 in one month like we did. Thankfully there are other restaurants in the valley who are happy to have us. I will be writing to the Hartford Courant as well. The watchdog isour family friend.
Dakota Steak House – Just got back from my favorite brunch restaurant, Dakota's in Avon, CT. Over the years I've been there dozens of times and it only got better each year. NOT ANY MORE!!!! I made a reservation for 11:30 and usually have a wait but this time the place was vacant. They sat us instantly and 20 minutes later we could not get our waitress to pay us one bit of attention so we got up and asked for another server. This girl was great-very attentive. Now the really bad part. The food was AWFUL. Beyond awful. Nothing on the salad bar was fresh as it used to be. They have eliminated their potato salad and cottage cheese and substituted a bucket quality cole slaw. The lettuces were obviously bagged instead of fresh. The cole slaw was musty. Now to the buffet-the scrambled eggs were so scrambled that there was not a piece bigger than a pencil eraser head. They were so dry that I had to put butter on them to be able to put them on my fork. Being huge bread eaters, were took a plate of bread and butter but couldn't get through a 1/2 of a piece due to the staleness. The ribs were dry and grisly, the roast beef baked to a severe dryness by the heat lamp. The seafood bar looked awful and the temperature in the room was not conducive to keeping the food at proper temperatures. Forget the dessert table-wasn't worth the calories. We feel so bad and understand that times are really tough but it would behoove this restaurant to cut back on quantity and keep the quality. Another restaurant in Avon on it's way out. How sad.
Steak House Chain Restaurant. – I have visited the Dakota in Lenox, MA and this one in Avon, CT- both are very similar. Log cabin style restaurant with good steaks and lobster. The salad bar is good. Sunday brunch is a nice family outing with casual dress. The home made multi-grain bread that arrives prior to your dinner is excellent. I prefer this type of steakhouse. There are a several rooms and room for a large group.
BEST BRUNCH – Our family usually goes once a month for thier brunch. it's well worth the money. extremely kid friendly...we have a 18 month old and a 5 year old. with reservations i don't seem to have to wait more then 5 or 10 minutes. When we've had to wait the employees were very helpful. My son was looking at the lobsters and an employee pulled it out for him to get a better look. As far as the food goes for bruch you can't get better. More then just the normal eggs and waffles. An entire table of fruit and fish are to enjoy as is a large selection of fresh made desserts. Haven't been there for dinner in a while...about 2 years but i've been there for lunch and have been satisfied every time. It's a very kid and wallet friendly place. Lunch usually costs the same as a nice meal at TGI Fridays but with better food. Would definetly recommend it as a great place for brunch.
Editorial Review by Christy Buena – Steak and seafood is featured at the family-friendly, log cabin style restaurant that offers a full bar and broiled entrees.
A New Dakota's? – I've glanced through some of these previous reviews, and I simply must disagree. Perhaps Dakota's has changed a lot in the past few years because I've gone at least 4 times in the past year or so (including for my graduation party, a birthday dinner, and Valentine's Day dinner), and I've always had a delicious meal, fabulous service, and never had to wait for a table. By the way, I didn't always make a reservation either. I do agree that there is a lack in variety as far as sides go, and I'm not ecstatic about the salad bar, but who cares? You go to Dakota's for STEAK. :o) The last time I went to Dakota's, I had the filet mignon with crab on top. Delicious -- I daydream about it from time to time. No joke. Also, one time, I got a filet with shrimp, and I dropped a few of the shrimp still on the skewer on the floor -- my waitress promptly brought me a whole new skewer! Also, they're always willing to bring you something else, or re-cook your steak if you're not satisfied. I really enjoy Dakota's, and it's probably one of the more affordable steakhouses around. Don't let these other reviews deter you -- head out to Dakota's.
I hate to wait – I was surprised the last time I went to Dakota's. Even with a reservation you had to wait in the past. The new manager explained that he has reduced the number of reservations they take so you may not get the exact time you ask for (everyone wants to eat at 6pm) but if you make a reservation for 10 or less people you will be sat within 5 minutes of your reservation time. It is a nice change that makes a good steak house better.
To Be, Or Not To Be – Dakota's steak is good, but not great. however the "Dakota cut" prime rid is hands down the best i've ever had period. Side dishes are lacking in variety, prices are decent. The wait to be seated sucks! The service over the ten or so times I have been there has been average. The atmosphere is that of a northern cabin in vermont, with various animal heads scattered here and about. several fire places provide lighting. Beer selection top notch. Overall, good place to eat on occasion for something different. good luck!!!
Not Recommended – After seeing the high rating on Citysearch and calling to see if they take reservations, I thought it was worth a try. The "reservation" is really not worthy much. I simply do not patronize places that make me wait. Service was slow. Atmosphere casual family at best. Food average.
Salad bar is the best thing there – I have gone to Dakota maybe a dozen times, if that. Every time you go, regardless if you have a reservation or not it is over an hour wait. You ask for your steak rare, they do it medium-rare, to medium well. To be honest, the best food in that place is the salad bar and the bread. I haven't been there in a long time, and I don't think I'll go back either. My fiance has gotten prime rib and another "good" cut of meat and he said that it was mediocre.
To be honest, the place that I would recommend is in a little town called Torrington on the winsted road. It's called Amarillo's Steak House and believe me when I say if you ask for your steak still moo-ing, that is waht you get!!
