Exclusively showcasing American art, this museum's impressive collection is a somewhat overlooked treasure. – The Scene
A 1907 residence contains one of Connecticut's finest art museums, though little known outside the state. Throughout the year the museum hosts various lectures, community programs (often on the first Friday of the month), Sunday concerts and an annual arts and crafts fair.
Significant collections of American Art include colonial and federal portraits, pieces from Hudson River School artists and twentieth-century works from the Ash Can School, surrealists and pop art. An entire gallery is devoted to painter Thomas Hart Benton's mural while pieces by Edward Hopper, Thomas Sully, and Georgia O'Keefe are also displayed. A wealth of Impressionist paintings begin with a coveted Mary Cassatt pastel and move on to include painters such as Julian Alden Weir, John Twachtman, Theodore Robinson, and Childe Hassam who either resided in Connecticut or visited the state regularly.
