Very good overall – My S.O. and I went to MOTR for New Yrs Eve this year. We made reservations for 5p and were seated on time when we arrived. The atmosphere is warm and cozy with the fireplace adding a lovely ambiance.
Our waitress was very attentive (and perhaps a little too much so at times). It was a bit odd that she only spoke to me when asking how the food was (ignoring my man). Not sure what that was about. At any rate... We ordered two cocktails to start and our soup and salad arrived very quickly thereafter. We had barely finished these itmes when our entrees arrived. I had the gorgonzola pork chop (huge chop dressed beautifully) which came with a delicious cranberry 'glaze', whipped yukon gold potatoes (a bit on the small side portion-wise) and wilted spinach sauteed with garlic. The meal was mouth-watering and cooked to perfection. My S.O. had the salmon with the whipped potatoes (again, too small of a portion) and green beans with carrots. He was happy with his meal as well. When our waitress saw we had finished our entree she quickly returned to inquire if we would like coffee or tea and/or dessert. She brought the menus back so we could browse the desserts, which she noted was made fresh daily by their pastry chef. I opted for the tiramisu and my S.O. had the cheesecake. I have to say that the tiramisu was THE BEST I've ever had, including that which I've had at Italian restaraunts and bakeries! It is beautifully plated and melts in your mouth. Absolutely excellent dessert.
When all was said and done with had completed our entire meal and were out the door in one-hour. I must admit we felt a bit rushed in that respect but the overall experience was very good. Food was excellent, atmosphere was lovely, staff were a bit over gratuitous at times but professional and polished. I kind of wish we had lingered longer but we intend to return and will do that next time. Suffice to say we were literally stuffed and quite happy with our dining experience at the MOTR.
A Very Special Wedding – I'd like to Thank the Management and Staff for making my wedding so special at the Mill. From the moment I got out of the limo each and all of the staff treated me with royalty. Everything was just perfect. The room was set up gorgeous. Everything fell into place really nice. Till the moment I left everything ran very smooth. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. If you are looking into having your wedding here I personally would highly reccommend speaking with Laura Coviello the Manager who made our wedding just perfect. She meets with you and wonderfully arranges your special day. Thank You all again, The Owner, Laura, all wait staff, and kitchen. I will never forget my special Wedding at the Mill. :)
BEST RESTAURANT – I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE, I TOOK MY FAMILY TO THE MILL ON THE RIVER, PARKING WAS PERFECT, WHAT GREAT PLACE, RIGHT FROM ENTERING THE COVERED BRIDGE, THE RIVER BELOW WAS JUST BEAUTIFUL. WE WERE WELCOMED BY THE OWNER AND THE WAITRESS THAT SAT US INFRONT OF THE FIREPLACE. WE INSTANTLY HAD 3 WAITRESSES FILLING OUR WATERS PUTTING BREAD ON THE TABLE AND ANOTHER TAKING OUR DRINK ORDER. EVERYTHING WAS SO NICE. tHE FOOD CAME OUT AND WAS JUST PERFECT. I JUST WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL THE STAFF AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE OWNER FOR SHOWING US THE NEW BAR. Reception Desk Staffed by Ditzes – We arrived for Sunday brunch with party of ten promptly at the time we had reserved and re-confirmed. "Table will be ready shortly." Fifteen minutes later the table was indeed ready, and the three young ladies at the reception desk promptly gave our table away to a party of five who'd just walked in. These babes were stumbling over themselves and had No Clue: They did not suggest we move into the bar to wait; did not point out the appetizer buffet was available; mis-estimated time for next table. Hostesses with no hospitality! The manager stepped in and "suggested" they help get our table ready. We finally sat down 40 minutes after our reservation time. That said, the brunch menu was nicely varied. the food was good, prices reasonable, promptly served. I'd go there again (but I'll hope that the, like, airheads at the reception desk, like, went back to their junior-high homeroom.).
Avoid!!! Don't order the specials!!! – At first I was taken aback by the beautfil venue. That was until I got out of my car and smelled the odoriforous "river." If someone told me that the septic drained into the river directly I would have believed them! I went in and they have a lovely bar, however, the rest of the decor is stuck in limbo between the 70's with hideous retro light fixtures to the modern 21st century with the art work above the fireplace. I looked over the extensive menu and narrowed down my selection to a seafood entree that server assured me was fantastic. She was a nice girl, but was slow with bring out our food. Upon arrival of my dinner I sent it back because the fish was cold. I then received back an entree that was pipping hot in the middle like it had been microwaved and the same sides were sloppily scraped onto the new plate. The fish must have been on its way out, because it was overpoweringly fishy. Maybe that is why it was on the special and the server was pushing it so hard. The server never came over again to see how everything was, but when she came back for our plates i let her know. She had a "to bad for you attitude," and took our plates. I ordered dessert which tasted like it was left in an open refridgerator for a long period of time. All I can say is I came to the Mill on the River hungry and left without an apetite.
Great food; Horrific Management – I recently had my wedding at the Mill on the river. The food was exceptional and so was the service. However, I should have been put off from booking my wedding there when I first went in to meet with the banquet coordinator. I sat in the lobby for almost an hour waiting for her. Another young girl told me she was just finalizing some other work, but I could see her talking to the other manager. I walked by the office to use the bathroom and at one point she was gossiping about the staff. I was really put off about the whole experience, but I couldn't pass up having my wedding at such a beautiful location. It came time for the big day and I was very excited. It was a beatiful Saturday morning this summer and perfect wether. When I arrived I wanted to wait some where so my groom would not see me before the wedding. I was told I could not go downstairs due to the set up crew or wait in the office. because it wolud be too chaotic. Needless to say I wound up waiting outside in the summer heat where 90% of my make up sweat off and I looked awful. It was nice though a server came outside and offered me a beverage. I never saw the blonde manager again until moments before I walked the aisle. She then evaporated again and reappered literally seconds before I had to be introduced. It was horrible. There was only one other function at the same time and it wasn't a wedding, so I'm not sure what she was doing. Maybe she was gossiping again. All in all I would avoid ever having a function there or speaking with their management. They are rude and aren't there for the customers. Food is outstanding and the service was great too.
Need Better Banquet Coordinators – Had my wedding at the Mill very recently and had a few not so good experiences with the Banquet Mgrs. They are very lucky that the guests had a great time and the food was excellent. When we were considering
having the reception at the Mill the banquet mgrs. could not be more attentive to us but once we paid them the final payment they dissapeared. I was under the impression that it was there job to oversee the wedding when the guests came in and tell them where to wait, make sure the chairs outside were cleaned off before the quests arrived etc... Well my husband to be was wiping off chairs before the ceremony and directing the guests where to go. Our flowers were not where they should have been, my family had to put out the favors (that's there job). The first time I saw either of the mgrs. was right before I walked down the aisle, we didn't need them then, too little too late. And don't even get me started about the rehersal. Also, one of the mgrs. said that we could change our outside wedding to inside 2 hours before the ceremony. I called well before that 2 hour window was up and the other mgr. said that we had to have a 24 hour notice ( I have witnesses).
Overall the wedding was a great success because of the food and the open bar and my guests were very understanding about the outside wedding but that's not the point. So if you pick the Mill for some sort of function you need to keep a close watch on the Banquet Mgrs. and make sure they stay on task.
Great Food, Bad Service – Pros - Beautiful Landscapes, Great Food!
Cons- Bad Service, Staff has bad attitudes
My mother had her wedding at The Mill on the River in 2008. From the very first meeting with the coordinator - who was 15 minutes late - had an attitude problem. We continued to plan the wedding with them because the landsacping is beautiful! The coordinating staff could use more experience in planning and coordinating weddings. The coordinators didnt even show up to the rehersal that they had us do in windy/rainy 45degree weather.
The coordinators are not attentive to the needs of the customer, they didnt lay out any "game plan" for when the bride and her attendants arrived. They were allowing guests to go into the reception room before the reception began- we feel they should have been directed to go to the bar or the gazebo. However, during pictures they did bring us our drinks! The waitstaff was quick to bring out the courses, and quick to take them away too - pretty much the second you put your fork down. However the food was excellent!
If you plan on having a wedding here, make sure you have plenty of friends to help you set up decorations because they don't , and you can only decorate 1hour before the ceremony start time. Keep an eye on any thing the staff throws out, because they just might throw out the wedding bands (which happened).
Make sure you are strong willed when working with the coordinators!
Terrible front desk service and inconsistent seating policies. Never got to the dining room. – We lost our table on a prior visit because we were 5 mins. late and there is no grace period for reservations. This time our party of 7 was early. After a 20-minute wait, while several parties came and went, we observed a suitable empty table, but were told it was for a party of 11 who were scheduled at the same time we were and were now 20 minutes late! Wouldn't they have lost the table by being late? They must have been very important people to have a table held for them well beyond their reservation time. The front desk personnel were not friendly or accommodating in any way. They didn't seem to care that they were permanently losing 7 locals. We had dinner at another restaurant where we had excellent food and friendly service.
Romance on the River – My girlfriend and I went to the Mill on the River and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Approaching the restaurant through the kissing bridge set the tone fot the rest of the evening. It is a very unique setting. The food was fantastic. We started with the crab cakes which were the best we ever had. For entrees we had the pecan crusted salmon and the chicken cordon bleu. Both were out of this world. I would recommend the Mill to anyone looking for a restaurant that is reasonable priced, romantic and has fantastic food. Overall we loved everything about it.
