Just go for brunch – Honestly, Creme is ok. Folks have raved about this place before but the only great meal I've had here was brunch, and the times I went I stuck with chicken n' waffles. Creme's chicken n' waffles is actually very good - the chicken is perfectly fried and seasoned pretty well, and sits on top of a huge waffle that fits the diameter of a large plate. Brunch is also great if you're willing to cough up the money for bottomless mimosas.
I've also been here for dinner and was less impressed. Our service was pretty good but the food wasn't impressive. I will vouch for their conch fritter appetizer, which were large, chock full o' crab and deliciously breaded and fried with a chipotle mayo.
The main dish I've had at Creme was disappointing; I ordered beef short ribs (way too much fat, not enough beef), which came with potatoes au gratin (had a weird taste) and green beans (too oily). I would've been happy with just the fritters for dinner.
Dessert did redeem the meal a bit - we ordered their chocolate terrine which was rich, creamy and great for a chocoholic like myself.
meh – Meh, this place was decent, average at best. I love the vibe inside, very cozy but modern. And it was the perfect temperature! I was able to take my jacket off and dine comfortably.
But the service was mediocre. The guy brought out only my wine, not my friends. Came back and ask him what he wanted again (two sample two wines first). Then took forever to bring those and even longer to bring out his glass of wine. We were done with our appetizers before he brought out his drink! And my glass of Italian pinot grigio was warm . He also ordered decaf coffee at the end of our meal and got the sugar and cream long before the coffee.
As far as the food goes-where were the chicken and waffles??? Maybe it's a brunch or lunch item?
Anyways... I had the short ribs with potatoes au gratin and my friend had the salmon with bacon. The flavors themselves were good and the food was cooked well (though my green beans were overcooked) but the food was way too rich for both of us. The bacon over powers the salmon and the dish itself was too salty. My rib was very tender but I could only eat about half of it b/c it was just too rich. So I suppose if that's how you like your food- this is a good spot for you. We'd come back, but not with any type of urgency.
Citysearch Editorial Review – This U Street cafe and lounge is a local favorite for its home-style classics such as meat and potatoes and shrimp and grits, and is especially popular for weekend brunch, when patrons line up outside the small space for chicken and waffles or green eggs and ham.
Terrible Service – My roommate and I went here for brunch a few months ago after a recommendation from a friend. It was a busy Sunday afternoon - peak brunch time in the District, and we waited patiently for about 30 minutes, while several other parties who arrived after us were seated before we were. When I finally asked, we were seated...at the bar. We weren't given menus, and the bartender didn't even acknowledge us - that is, until we got up to leave. He half-heartedly apologized, the hostess finally gave us menus (after we asked), and we ordered. Our food arrived in a timely manner- but we were even never given silverware, which we had to retrieve for ourselves. The bartender never checked on us, and we left: full, but utterly disgusted with the service. Creme was a classic case of good food ruined by egregious service. I would unfortunately not recommend it.
Bruncherous McMuncherous! – As a Young adult with a habit of getting after it every now and then in the evening, I find that a kick-ass brunch is just about the best thing possible. Creme's delivers some rocking meals, at a fair cost, coupled with bottomless Bloody Mary's and Mimosas.
