History buffs enjoy camping in the shadow of a Civil War-era fort, still guarding Florida's northernmost tip. – The Setting
Built to guard the Atlantic mouths of the St. Mary's and Amelia Rivers, this barrier island fort was part of a larger complex that included several shipping beacons. Today, anglers love the nearby pier and swimmers enjoy the wide beaches. Its 1,100 acres include sand dunes, maritime hammock and estuarine tidal marsh. It also has examples of coastal strand habitat, now mostly developed.
Full-featured campsites with water and electric hook-ups and grills are available; there is a youth camping area as well for schools and tours. At the park, interpreters roam the area, while the fort itself can be toured year-round.
