I had the pleasure of spending a week in St. Augustine, and while there, I stumbled upon this lovely store. They have the most beautiful and unique jewelry. I quite agree with the other poster who pointed out, they are a cut above all of the other "touristy stores." The women that worked there were very pleasant and highly knowledgeable about the artisans and jewelry companies they purchase from. I only wish I could have purchased one of everything there. I am happy to read this company has a strong sense of community, this breeds even greater respect than I already had for them. I will frequent this store happily every time I am in St. Augustine, and every time I wear one of the four charms I purchased, I will smile at what a fantastic host the city of St. Augustine is.
Rave reviews for the J.R. Benet Store - - from a true local! – I read, with disdain, the negative review recently posted by “St Aug local” in regards to the J.R. Benet Store in downtown St. Augustine. I would like to preface my statement with a few facts. My husband, 3 children & I have lived in this lovely town of St. Augustine over 24 years, frequent the downtown area, & have walked & shopped the downtown streets & shops for well over two decades. Over these many years, we have seen various businesses on historic St. George Street come & go, just like anywhere else on the map. St. Augustine is a small town, &, like us, local residents who are involved in community events, downtown improvement issues, etc., have come to know, appreciate & support those business owners whose establishments have weathered & stood the tests of time. J.R. Benet store is an example of that type of business. Most St. Augustine locals know that the J.R. Benet Store - - an icon, here in the oldest city - - has prospered for over 30 years - - longer than any other business; so something has been done right! My family, as well as much of the St. Augustine community have come to know the Penningtons as exemplary & successful shop owners in the downtown area, offering unique & reasonably-priced gifts that one cannot find in your average touristy gift shop. Through the years, it has been our experience they strive to ‘serve the customer’ with friendliness & respect. Because of my involvement with civic affairs in town, I happen to know the Penningtons have graciously given numerous tangible & monetary donations to many local charitable organizations, are long-time active Chamber members, & are involved in other community organizations as well.
Thus, my suspicion regarding this negative reviewer is no different than whenever I read a negative review of a hotel or restaurant I personally know to be top-notch - - an immature disgruntled employee whose goal is to undermine & contaminate. Consider that your toxic behavior will, at some point, catch up with you at one time or another. Lastly…another indication that the negative reviewer knows not the facts - - their comment about ‘the shop owners deciding to move here from up north’ is not accurate, nor does it refer to the owners of this shop. Mr. Pennington was born here, & never have they resided 'up north."
Visit this lovely shop for yourself. I know you'll be glad you did!
Souther Hospatality Done Right – Excuse me
You call yourself a Southern Lady while falsely accusing the owner Marla her daughter of being the “rudest, nastiest, women I have ever encountered” Are we talking about the same store and owner? The Benet Store I know is the oldest continuously run store in St. Augustine. The owner must be doing something right, she has owned and operated the business for 33 years. Employed hundreds of people over the years. Given generously to schools, churches and charities even during tuff times. Involved in community and Chamber of Commerce activities and would give you the shirt of her back if you were in need.
Because you’re too coward to pin your name to your accusations we’ll probably never know your real motive for your petty lies. But for the rest of the world who might read your misdirected rantings and form a premature opinion as to whether or not visit our wonderful City and the Benet Store. Let me reassure them, you’ll never visit a better City, a nicer store and be greeted/serviced by a more courtesy owner or employees. And how can I attest to that fact? I’ve had the honor and privilege of being married to the owner Mrs. Marla for the last 29 years.
One more important point. My wife’s family was early pioneers to this community over 150 years ago. So they are about as Southern as they come. But the Southern Hospitality we embrace is a state of honor, integrity, grace, charm and friendship. Southern manners can be acquired no matter what side of the Mason-Dixie line you come from. Perhaps you should apologize to all those fine folks who were not born in the South but elected to move and participate in our heritage?
After doing that will you please pass me some of that good sweet tea? Thank you Ma'am
