I had a horrible experience at the Orange City store. I brought my 14 year old son with, who has very brown skin. The entire time we were there (15-20 minutes) we were blatantly followed by an employee. After I told my son that they were watching us to see if we were stealing, probably because of the color of his skin, he noticed it immediately, too. After checking out, I asked to speak to the manager, Jody. I said that I had finally, after 14 years old, been able to show my son how some stores will target him and follow him to make sure he doesn't steal, based solely on the color of his skin. NEVER have I experienced such blatant profiling. The manager did not apologize for our experience, did not deny we were being followed. Instead, she only justified it by saying theft was a huge problem there. She denied we were being followed because of my son's color. I asked why we were being monitored, she said no one looks like a thief, but that it's based on "attitude". When I asked if I (dressed professionally and just browsing the store) was projecting an attitude that I was going to shoplift, she said no. So how to explain the employee's very obvious stalking of us?
This store was my (white) husband's favorite store in the area, but we have both decided to take our business elsewhere. It's too bad, because my husband really did like this store. However, we cannot tolerate any type of racial profiling towards anyone, much less our children. I'm surprised since it's been my experience that health food stores are more tolerant than other stores--but that tolerance apparently doesn't extend to people of color at Debbie's Health Food Store in Orange City, FL.
To liz f. we sincerely apologize for the issue you had with our product. We would like to offer you a gift certificate as an apology. Please come into our store so we can personally apologize and give you this gift certificate. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you.
Gotta agree with Dee D. Debbie's has expired products post expired products and she wants full price for them. I bought french fries tonight (organic) on Rainbow Tuesday and they tasted funny. Knowing Debbie's reputation for selling expired stuff I had my daughter check the date on the bag. Sure enough. our organic french fries expired in May 2012. Ummmm this is SEPTEMBER!!!! I go to health food stores to ... drum roll please!!! GET HEALTHY!!!! Not sick from expired food!!!! Agree with Dee. Last time. She's lost my business forever. I won't even go there for vitamins. The Deland Market is a farther drive, but the people who own it are ETHICAL (DEBBIE ARE You LISTENiNG????) and mark their (NOT YET EXPRIRED STUFF) at a deep discount. They don't leave expired things on the shelf and expect you the consumer to "deal with it." All other stores have a reasonable return policy and Debby is no returns ever. Oh and one more thing. One year we bought a gluten free pumpkin pie from her. It was very good. We bought one the next year. Guess what??? It was ROTTEN!!! She stored those pies for AN ENTIRE YEAR AND RESOLD THEM!!!! yuCK!!!! Sorry Debby. Greed has overtaken your desire to promote health.
Just lost me as a long time customer – They disappointed me for the last time today.
A month ago I realized I had purchased an expired Organic Bistro entree, I called the manufactor and received a couple of coupons. A week or so ago I used the coupons and got four entrees, one was buy one get one, another was buy one get one half price. It was disgusting. Now I realize that is not Debbie's fault so I took a picture of it and went back with the other three dinners for a refund. I did not have my receipt but explained that since I had coupons I only wanted 1/3 of the money back. The cost was about $24 I asked for $7 or $8 to put towards today's purchase. She looked me up in the computer and found when and what I had purchased but refused to give me any money back because I had used coupons. I expalined again that I was not expecting a full refund just $8 to make me happy and put towards the purchase of vitamins that was have cost over $30 so I just asked for $8 to go towards that. She was very rude and outright refused BECAUSE I USED COUPONS. I told her I had been a customer for over 15 years and was she going to lose me because of $8, she again said "YOU USED COUPONS SO I CANT GIVE YOU ANYTHING! I told her I was very unhappy and that I was going to write a review and let all my facebook friends and other sites know. On top of that, they have the salmon entree in the freezer that expired last month are are selling at full price, I pointed it out and she said people still buy it and the owner won't always reduce the price. I could write another paragrah on how rude she was but I think you get the meaning here. I would love to stand outside their door and boycott them. Please repost this on your facebook and ask you friends to do the same. This type of no customer service is unacceptable and unless we join forces it will continue. Thanks for listening.
Totally disatisfied the last time I was @ Debbies when I had the displeasure of meeting Kate, I am not sure if she is new or what. I've been doing Naturalpathics for 15 yrs. & thought that I would be able to speak w/ someone w/ some knowledge of herbs, vitamins and etc.but after speaking w/ her for about 5 min. not only did I feel rushed but I noticed how she was full of it!!!!
Great Customer service – I have been in this store quite a few times and I have always found the staff both helpful and knowledgeable. The prices aren?t too bad either considering it?s a health food store.
Great customer care - answer all your questions ! – I strongly disagree with the other review. I shop at Debbies Health Food all the time. It is an amazing store. I always get the help i need. I know the clerks dont know EVERYTHING but they do their best to find out any way to help. It is the best health food store i have ever been to. I love having conversations with the store clerks and Debbie herself. I have been to Natures Garden they were snotty and didnt even ask if i needed help, when i tried to get attention they kept talking to one another. So i left and went to Debbies and got the help i needed. I recommend Debbies to everyone i know.
Dissapointing customer service – Don't shop in the evening if you expect any assistance, I have been here on several occasions and even when there are more employees than shoppers I have been ignored by one and all. I go to Natures Garden instead. At Debbies either I am deluged when I don't have questions or ignored when I approach someone for assistance. But I am an RN and always do my own research before relying on info from health food store clerks. It would have been helpful however, to get some anecdotal info on the helpfulness of some childrens products before buying.
