Reviews for Walter Hoving Home

It is so sad to read the misguided reviews on this site. The Walter Hoving Home is an amazing blessing and opportunity. They DO NOT accept taxpayer dollars. They do not do "organized" fundraising or invest in marketing campaigns to increase fundraising. They ask for a meager $500/month per resident - most rehab facilities cost 3 times that amount. Most rehab facilities will not allow a resident to stay for 6 months to a year.

WHH will NOT turn a lady away because she cannot pay. They will help her find a way to earn the fee. It is not difficult to understand why so many wrote negative reviews about this. These are the same ones who want their kids to be able to stay at the home when they break the rules. How do you think your kids got into the problems they have? When I read your reviews I keep seeing "enabler" between the lines.

If you are trapped by drugs and alcohol and you think there is nothing left out there and no one will love you - call the Walter Hoving Home. They will love you, lift you up, won't accept any lame excuses - but you will be free of your addiction if you work this program.

As for the waiting list - this is because the local courts LOVE to send women to this program. It does not cost the government a dime!

I have nothing but gratitude for the Walter Hoving Home. They run this amazing program on an extremely lean budget - more than 78% of the budget goes directly to running the program. Amazing in today's economy.

As for the complaints about having to do work at the home - how silly. Of course a resident must contribute to the home - if you can't manage to do this HERE, how will you manage to do it on the outside? There is no free ride - you cannot get something for nothing.

If you are serious about your future - if somewhere in the back of your mind you know there has got to be another way - I want to encourage you to call them. You can do it!

Both my daughters went here when they were involved with drugs. Both complained about the lack of opportunity to talk about or come to terms with the pain they had experienced in life. Also, the fact that women get kicked out for smoking???? or for sleeping with their longtime boyfriend when they get a chance for a home visit is truly wrong priorities. Christians should be less concerned about minor infractions and more concerned about the big picture of saving these women from involvement in drugs. Much more need for compassionate counselling, possibly 12 step meetings and more job training and less concern about "sinning". This place was started back in the 70's (I believe) when the new Christian movement was going strong and needs to update...not to overlook wrong but to have TONS more grace and less dogmatic attitudes about recovery of these women. Allow internet and television and stop being so restrictive. It doesn't help.

If you live in 2012- amongst modern medicine and modern thinking, you might want to reconsider living at the Walter Hoving Home.

Take it from me, an ex-tenant.

For those who are court-ordered - I say sorry now.

These so-called Christians (the staff) are no better than the worst Evangelists you see on TV.

Okay, you’re not allowed to see a dentist or doctor for the first 90 days. So finish up your screwed up teeth and your health beforehand. Or, just suffer for the first 90 days. Or, of course there’s always their suggestion – just pray to Jesus for any pain that arises -to go away until the 90th day.

And remember the staff are experts in the field of medicine, so don’t question their authority in the manner.

If you’re a homosexual or planning on being one – I would keep this to yourself. It’s a really bad Sin that you will be reminded of plenty of times. According to their God – he doesn’t approve of these types of humans.

You might want to bring some sunscreen 50 and some professional walking shoes – you’ll need em!! Come Friday and Saturday- you’ll be walking the streets all day asking for money. If you get blisters on your feet or a bad sunburn, start praying (for pain relief).

There is one thing I must say in honesty-they do know how to cook - hence the only "star" I gave as a rating. So if you like good grub, well eat up. This will be in no doubt the highlight of your day.

They also have work schedule, which I’m not against. I just don’t see the point of 6 women cleaning the same van 5 days straight.

I must mention that there is one lady on the staff, who in my opinion, was more open minded and seemed more grounded in reality - her name is Tea.

So my recipe for getting through this recovery home is: Leave your integrity, common sense, and your personal beliefs at the front door – and you might just make it!

Good luck and if you can do this, you can do ANYTHING on the outside!!

-Very grateful, Ex-tenant.

Walter Hoving cold blooded staff – Walter Hoving Home of Pasadena staff are unforgiving and cold blooded. My daughter was there for one month and during that time she was doing good in the program until a staff member kick her out of the home for smoking.

It was only the second time she was busted. They told her to pack her bags and get off the facilities immediately, she could not remain on the grounds any-longer.

I found out later that Walter Hoving Home had a long waiting list for beds. A waiting list means money, so if they used your $500 up, and you break any rules, and your not on the streets peddling money for them.....they want you out, and their not going to show you any mercy. I talked with their staff and tried hard to get them to take her back, but they would not under any circumstances back off. This showed me that they are a bunch of cold blooded hypocrites that are only interested in money.

I am going to write and make my complaint to the state attorney general, because I believe if they can't bear with

a lost child over a minor temptation, they should be shut

ex tenant – It is a cult. They give special treatment to the women whose family is blackmailed in to giving them $500.00. The women are expected to beg twice a week to collect that much per month. If they decide your family speaks out against them, they will be barred from vising there own children and the women are told God Took there parent from them. They told my daughter she should forget about her mother and she should stand behind the staff instead. That is a cult and I think should be shut down. The owners took a vacation every other week, but tell the girls they are broke. When someone donates a time share the girls are not allowed to use it. It is only for the owners. This is a cult say far away from this place. My daughter was in there for drug treatment but got none in there. Forced to do 4 hours of bible study instead. The staff is evil. All the bad choice they make they say its God who did it. God help us from this evil using your name.

Walter hoving home changes peoples lives – You seem to have some interesting knowledge of the home... so sistet. I spent 16months in this program in CA and NY and I always ate well!!. In fact I put on a few pounds while I was there because there was so much good food. And for all the the years of service and the thousands of people they have helped Mom and Dad B can go on vacations anywhere they want, they should be retired by now. And if you were overseeing three homes across the country you would want to visit them all frequently as well. And how much money do you think it takes to take care of over 100+ women without requiring a dime from them... unfortunately it takes money to run these things and fundraising in this economy is difficult. So FYI.... the walter hoving home changes peoples lives..I'm living proof!

PIMPING THE DOWN & OUT FOR YOUR TAX $$ – The home would have a positive influence, but the owners John and Elsie along with their staff, namely Kiyomi, the Director, and Angela, I'm not sure wha here role is really, have a unique way of trying to pull money from people. Because some of the women are former prostitutes, it is hard to not see this as pimping at its finest.

As a Christian based program, the administrators should reflect on how they use scriptures for the "down and out" in making them feel as though it is there duty to be meek and service their masters (ie, the administrators/staff, that have been appointed on Earth by the Lord) ("slavery with a smile"); not complain or question without fear of being reprimanded or discharged from the home.

The home makes money off of women filing for State Food Stamps (instead of being eligible to send the money to their deserving children). The phrase of "your first priority is to this home" is used as validation. The problem is they use the money (food) primarily for their (the staff and administrators) for their personal use, to feed the Benton's friends, family, and constituants. The womens' daily diet consist of donated bagels/bread, expired milk (of sometimes 2+ weeks or more), and almost daily consumption of bologna or pressed ham sandwiches. However, on Sunday evenings, the woman can sit down together to enjoy up to two peanut butter and jellly sandwiches.

I cannot understand where the money is going because women spend 2 days per week going door-to-door or standing at local stores asking for donations for the home. When in actuality, the home is still using their 2009 fiscal year budget for most needs.

My greatest concern is the home indicating (by its director, Kiyomi) that the home is in need of $250,000.00 (yes, 1/4 of a million dollars) to keep their doors open. My suggestion is that they refrain from 4 day staff meetings at the owners' retirement homes in either/both Colorado and Mexico. Secondly, if they are in desperate need, the owners can take one or two less vacation trips per month. (They avg. one week per month on-site at te home.)
