Perfect! – I love this restaurant. It took me years to get there because I am a cheap eats person and the $$ made me think this is too expensive but it's NOT! The service is absolutely amazing; its a show in itself!!! The food fantastic! The prices are reasonable. There is no reason not to go; except if you don't like Chinese food. Reservations are strongly recommended but if you did what I did, you can walk in off the street, make a reservation and go to Nonya for cocktails while you wait.
Worth a try, but not a regular – I enjoyed my experience at Yujean Kang's, but probably won't be frequenting it on a regular basis. The staff was wonderful, attentive, and friendly. The food was beautifully presented, but not really worth the inflated price of "gourmet".
The food is soooo good – I am chinese and I love this restaurant. The food is very tasty and creative. Prices are good.
I have typically had very good experiences with restraunts that citysearch users rate highly--- but this time, I was severely disappointed. We waited a full five minutes before anyone even greeted us, and then the hostess was not particularly accommadating about giving us the table that we preferred. Although we found out later that she was a new waitress in training, the first server that came to take our drink and appetizer order FORGOT the lettuce cups that we ordered. The wine list was pricey-- the cheapest wine was $38, not really leaving any options for people that are trying to eat on a budget. The crispy spicy beef was dull, uninspired and overly salty. I had high expectations, and the entire experience was very disappointing.
Yujean Kang's Gourmet – I first visited Yujean's in 1988 when it was written up in Gourmet as one of the top 10 new restaurants in the U.S. It was an experience I'll never forget even though I've returned almost every week since. It's the most wonderful food on the planet- from old favorites like crispy beef or tea smoked duck (warning these are addicting, movie stars have them flown in when on location)to any new dish he makes- I love them all! I brought my goddaughter when she was 15b and this week she is having her wedding dinner there. The lunch is the beast deal in Los Angeles-3 courses plus cookies for under 10.00. Any time you go you'll find it is just the BEST. Yujean also is a wine pairing expert- enjoy!
Fresh, modern Chinese fare and impeccable service are the hallmarks of this Old Town mainstay. – The Scene
The elegant, though slightly worn, dining room is reminiscent of a fine bistro, with brick-red walls, black-lacquer accents and white-clothed tables. Attentive servers don't miss a beat; water glasses are always full and meals are deftly distributed among the table. A mix of loyal locals and off-the-street diners avoiding the Cheesecake Factory line up almost every night.
Kang and his adept crew fuse traditional Chinese techniques with non-traditional ingredients, like Parma ham and Mediterranean calamari--the results are both appetizing and eye-catching. The rich enoki and black mushroom soup topped with a red bell pepper painting on snow-white meringue is as delicious as it is beautiful. Slippery dumplings stuffed with ground pork and doused in spicy-sweet chili oil are easy to devour and disappear far too quickly. Moist smoked duck gets the showstopper's treatment as it's deconstructed tableside, wrapped in paper-thin pancakes and beautifully matched with tangy hoisin sauce.
Best Chinese Cuisine – This spot just off the Old Town Pasadena shopping strip is perfect for great quality food for a reasonable price and wonderful service. It's difficult to find all of these traits in a restaurant these days. I highly recommend it for a romantic dinner for two, or a family dinner with the kids. It's for everyone. We've been going there for years now and will continue to do so. Just remember to get the Mandarin Orange Cheese Cake after your meal(s). This is a perfect ending to a perfect dinner.
yummy to the tummy – The food is always good especially the sauteed Blue Lake green beans. This is not the Sunday night Chinese restaurant you used to go to with your mom and dad, this restaurant is a more like a bistro. The service is extremely professional and curteous.
Best Chinese Food Ever – Definately the best chinese food I have ever had. The crispy beef was awesome. I felt bad that my family couldn't finish dinner, it was so good I didn't want to leave any leftovers. Recently tried to go back and they were remodeling and weren't open. But as soon as they open up I am there.
The best of two worlds. – The chef at Yujean Kang understands traditional Chinese cooking (go hang out in Monterey Park if you want the best traditional Chinese food in the US) but brings his own creativity to the mix. Every dish carefully prepared and presented.
