Very disappointing facial – I was so looking forward to a relaxing facial but instead was shown to a freezing cold room that never warmed up as I was told it would. The esthetician was very nice but in my opinion, a novice. The spa facial was to include hand, foot, scalp and shoulder massage but the esthetician continually said that she is not a massage therapist so it is not really a hand, foot, scalp and shoulder massage and it wasn't! It was more like a minor rub, about two minutes each foot and maybe three minutes per hand. The products were nice but that was the only positive thing to come out of this facial. When I asked to speak to a manager while paying, a young man introduced himself as the "front desk" manager and asked how everything was. I told him the truth in a very courteous manner but he really did not want to hear the truth. He showed me the door as quickly as he could as others were listening to our conversation. There are so many other day spas and small businesses that provide a superior facial; I will not be returning to Burke Williams Pasadena. Their prices are outrageous for the product, too. The facility is clean but crowded.

Employee reviews – The economy being low is no excues to take advantage of and abuse potential employees and employees. If the economy is effecting the day spa so terribly should close its doors with dignity before resorting to paying employees little to nothing and overworking technicians. The unprofessionalism and condescending attitude displayed by the trainer of the company, Michele, is horrendous and nothing short of harassment. I commend anyone who endures through the training program/free labor. To add insult to injury one must deal with Michele, the bully. The only time I saw this woman smile was when she was pawning of her jewlery catalogs, which was her second source of income and in direct violation of company policy. We were all made aware that we would be terminated if we promoted any personal business or even contacted a client. The company training program goes against every formal estheticians training. The burke williams "facial" is more of a 40 min massage and ten minute facial. I know that I didnt become an esthetician to do the job of a masseuse and nor am I qualified to do so. The extrenous 12 week below minimum wage "training" or "free labor" was basically a massage course and sales training on how to push burke williams skincare products on clients. The burke williams phiolosophy is relaxation however we were told to pitch products aggresively and talk to clients during treatment. As the massage training wrapped up we were told to book out rooms at the spa and give free facials to family and friend for 4 hours a day. As burke williams knows and uses to their advantage...the economy is down therefore some of us worked at nights to try to keep up with bills and found it hard to make time. We were also expected to push products on our family and friends while recieving no comission. After this period and testing out you are to enter "internship" which is basically another two to three months of burke williams inservitude.

You were to work for up to three months for no comission but luckily bumped up to whole $10 per hour. If we didnt meet our quota of selling $1000 worth of product per month we were to remain another month on no commision which is basically the only source of income coming in from burke. You also would recieve no commision from your product sales during internship. Basically it should be a honor to even be in the spa with a a client. Also if you didnt find enough family and friends to offer your free services to the trainer will happily offer you a list of numbers including her family and friends who would love to get a free facial with you! The last two months of "internship" was just another way of working estheticians with no pay. To add insult to injury you have to deal with another rude condescending woman name Sue Promini at the pasadena location who finds it hard to answer a question or even look at you without twitching and rolling her eyes. We were immediately warned of her and how she is "moody". As I enetered the spa I realized that there was a portion of my job duties that was left out which was esthetician/housekeeper. The esthetician rudely demanded I was the baseboards of my room! I fully understand the duties of wiping down steamers and mag lamps etc....but I was not aware that I had to mop the floors, sinks and wash baseboards. Ubfortunately there was no toothbrush available because I am almost certain I would be asked to use it. The head esthetician also told me to view myself as a "butler". I am sorry but I didnt spend over ten thousand dollars on schooling to become an esthetician to be treated this way. Also Julie most of us arent "grateful" to make the rich richer on the expense of our labor and well being. I have read other reviews about the unethical practices of burke williams and Micheles repulsive attitude however they were conveniently removed. Just a tip...I will keep reposting this exact same message on several forums over and over again.

HORRIBLE – OMG!!! Made a waxing appointment, yup, bikini, turned into a nightmare.

I asked for a very basic brazilian, assumed they were a professional spa with real professional aestheticians.. NO!!!! She had no idea what she was doing, started globbing tons of wax on then yanking and yanking and she didn't know what to do. I had to stop her and say you don't know what you're doing do you? Please go get someone else! The second aesthetician came in, took one look and said Oh my god. She spent a good 30 minutes up in my business cutting the wax out with scissors.

I was so raw form the first lady trying to rip it out, they had to just stop.

I am home and sore with a HALF A BALD business. UNBELIEVABLE.

I will never ever ever go back and am demanding they pay for me to get fixed at a real, professional salon.

Shocking. horrible, stupid place.

Awesome Experience – I visited the spa before making reservations for my best friends birthday becauase of the reviews I'd read. This is a first class establishment. I toured the facility with no hesitation from the staff and made my reservations for four before I left. My friend who was celebrating her birthday was just as impressed as I was as soon as she walked in the door, as were her sister and friend with us. The parking lot across the way was close and convenient, the treatments we had were excellent, the staff treated us like we were VIP's, but that is the way everyone seemed to be treated. We stayed as long as we wanted, and were never rushed. The only negative is we had to be quiet in the jacuzzi, and try and keep any number of women quiet in a close enviornment. The frozen grapes, cucumber slices and warm towels for our eyes were served to us by staff members as if we were royality. If you want to treat yourself or someone you care a lot about, you have to visit BW in Pasadena. The spa is within walking distance from many restaurants, and we were able to leave the car in the lot, drop off our bags, and walk to lunch. My friend is still thanking me, and asking when are we going to do it again.

Great Spa but feel sorry for technicians – i go to burke williams frequently and i have been to many of their spas because i travel for work. I find it very "non' relaxing when i get a facial to have the esthetician constantly telling me everything they are using on my face..sure thats great if i have a concern but i feel that these estheticians are being pressured into selling to clients because burke williams is not doing well. i just got an email from my friend who lives in Danville, CA and they just shut down that spa...i used to like coming into burke williams when i didn't feel like i had to buy something. i liked to relax. I sat and watched some of the technicians after my service and honestly felt bad for them they run around with their heads cut off some of them. Working for a spa should be relaxing in my opinion but I think because the whole company isn't doing well as a whole their employees are suffering from being forced to sell sell sell. I used to recommend this spa to many of my employees but now feel like I need to find a better one where they can relax and not feel pressured..

Treatment was fine but... – I went to Burke Williams for a facial a few days before my wedding and it was fine. The facial was good but the technician kept talking and trying to push their products during my service. I felt like a wallet rather than a client. Like I said, the facial was fine but the upsell put me off. Too bad. Also, crowded.

horrible employers - shame on Burke – Well... I'm a former employee of Burke Williams and when I started there approximately 3 years ago, it was a well respected spa... But I left a year ago after they had given it's employees a raise and then a few months later took back the raise while increasing it's fees for services... Not only are they taking away from the employees but thay are scalping the customers as well...

Believe me, when they increase the fees, not a penny goes to the therapists whose hard work and training is the primary basis for its return clientele...

Since then, they have cut the therapists pay twice...

When I started, the base pay was $15.00 an hour plus incentives.. Went up to $20.00 and is now down to about $11.00 per service... Plus incentives... Sounds like borderline slave labor considering the traing that we all had to take to become an employee of this 'fine establishment'... So what's been happening is that any high quality, skilled, intuitive therapist with any self respect is not going to continue to work there... I didn't and as you see the prices go up, you will see quality go down... Wouldn't surprise me to see Burke close it's doors before the end of the year...

Boo Hoo...

Excellent amenities but PRICEY – We like Burke Williams for our quarterly re-energizing weekends. The fruited waters, iced towels and tranquil environment really works wonders. Our only concern is that they have raised their prices almost yearly and the service from the staff has changed as new staff is hired. Long story short, not the same return on our investment for quality of care recieved.

Great place for a relaxing massage! – Burke Williams is a great day spa located in the heart of old town Pasadena. Locals know where to find the spa, but visitors might find it a bit hard to locate as it is nestled in an alleyway...the last place you'd think to find a spa! The service is always great and your appointments are on-time. The spa area is a nice place to relax, but can sometimes get crowded and a little loud (especially on the weekends). Overall, a great place to relax and rejuvenate.

BUYER BEWARE!!! – In the process of purchasing a gift certificate at Burke Williams official website, the application crashed. I immediately called customer service, explained what happened. I said my account was charged and emailed screen shots of the errors. They insisted my account was not charged (with attitude) and said that they were aware of problems with the site.

It took 5 days, many emails and over 2 hours on the phone to resolve the issue. To make matters worse, the manager's solution was to RECHARGE my card and credit it back later IF the original charge was confirmed. The only compensation they offered for the stress and inconvenience was free shipping which would not have been necessary if they had listened to me to begin with. Buyer beware!
