Dine with roosters in this fun and funky slice of laid-back Key West. – In Short
More than 100 years ago, this colorful, ramshackle building and rambling courtyard were home to gambling, prostitution, cockfighting and boxing matches refereed by Ernest Hemingway. Now, home to more prosaic pursuits of dining, drinking and selling trinkets, it's an endearingly funky mishmash of picnic tables, bars, a gift shop, a water tower, a pingpong table, a rooster cemetery and actual roosters. It's everything eggs in the morning and Caribbean/continental for lunch and dinner.
Best Key Lime Pie ... in a fun atmosphere! – Stopped at many places in the keys to try as many key lime pies as possible and this place's pie was THE BEST!!!!!!! We went at lunch time (just after 1pm) and didn't have to wait for a table. Servers don't dote on you, so if thats the service you need then don't stop here. All dishes ordered at our table were outstanding ... the lobster was awesome as were the grilled cheese sandwiches and the JamaicanJerk chicken cesear. The bread there is to die for. If you do stop here, go when its not peak dining hours and definitely try their key lime pie.
Terrific! – At the recommendation of our innkeeper at the Seascape Inn we walked to Blue Heaven for dinner. It was the middle of Goombay, and I feared that we'd never get in, but we had a table in 15 minutes.
The service was great, the food outstanding, and the portions were HUGE! I'm no small guy, and I couldn't finish the BBQ Shrimp/Brown Rice/Black Beans, but it wasn't for lack of trying! My wife and I shared a boston bibb/gorgonzola salad (the server recommended we split it - we were going to each have one, and she was right), then out came our entrees - the BBq Shrimp and terrific pork tenderloin over delicious sweet potatoes.
I was disappointed with the rum-in-the-coconut drink we got from the streetside bar before we were seated... It's just a coconut, they cut a hole, pour out some of the milk, and poor in some Captain Morgans.. Not enough rum, not much flavor.
The desserts looked great, but we were too full to try...
Blue Heaven – It was my favorite restaurant in Key West. Good food. Great atmosphere. Great music. Good service. I enjoyed the outside dining.
I went here one morning and had a breakfast tortilla. I wasnt expecting anything amazing, but its one of the few breakfast places open at 8 AM. I was pleasantly suprised, it was the best meal I've ever had in my life, literally. A group I went with after recovering from a night of boozing went a few hours after I did and they said the same thing as I did. Fantastic!
too long of a wait – dont expect to be seated in under two hours, this last november our freinds went to key west for the first time and because rachael ray stopped at blue heaven they had to go,after a two hour fifteen minute wait we were all seated ,a hour for our food to get there,25 minutes trying to pay the tab.we told them there are great little places all over the island that havent received all the hype
Great Place – What an awesome place to dine...unique is not even a word to descripe it...The food was excellent...so was the service and ambiance/entertainment...i.e....chickens. We have eaten at many 5 and 4 star resturants and the food there equaled and surpassed. We ate at the Blue Heaven more than once during our stay....
Bring a Friend! – We visited Key West with 4 other couples and have a tendancy to go seperate ways for breakfast. We went to Blue Heaven they went for "tradition fare" eggs and bacon. The wait was well worth it! Mimosas tied us over. The Lobster Benedict was superb - so good that we raved to our friends and they agreed to come with us the next day. We walked over and they complained about how far it was, but after brunch said it was well worth it. The chickens, the outdoor atmosphere and the homemade bloody marys are only a small part of the entire experience. We had the seafood omlet (YUM!). lobster benedict, pancakes and other omlettes. The coffee was so smooth and flavorful, I'm now hooked on Baby's and order it on a regular basis for home and work. We will definitely return every time we visit Key West!
Great...but avoid it during rush! – I live in Key West and I have to say that Blue Heaven is one of my favorite places to take visitors. Only never during meal rushes...they tend to have young staff who are usually working their 3rd job. The food is always great...we love the swing and the fun things to do around the restaruant. The chickens are little uncomforting at first, but you grow to like them. There is nowhere else like it...don't miss it!
Worth It!!! – You have to look for the Blue Heaven, but it really, really is worth it. Everything is a 10 and it is a fun place to boot.
