This restored synagogue presents the bittersweet history of South Florida Jews. – In Short
Hard to believe anything in transient Miami is considered historic, but this former orthodox synagogue, built by established art-deco architect Henry Hohauser in 1936, surely qualifies. Recent million-dollar renovations have included the addition of dozens of stained-glass windows. Located at the southern end of the restored art-deco district, the museum preserves 230 years of Jewish history and culture with a permanent exhibit called MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida. Over 500 photos, documents, and artifacts tell the bittersweet story of South Florida Jews. The Ziff also sponsors bus tours of Miami Beach and works with various art galleries such as Belvetro, who recently presented "Judaica in Glass" to benefit the museum. Admission on Shabbat is free, but be warned: Call before you go. The museum, naturally, closes for Jewish holidays.
