Unparalleled bay views and lush tropical plants mesmerize visitors to this lavish historical property. – In Short
Those Deering Brothers sure knew how to live large. While James was importing Italian marble for his little winter cottage, Vizcaya, brother Charles was building this sprawling bayside mansion. The 1922 estate included a 14,000-square-foot house overlooking the bay and the Richmond Cottage, the first hotel in Florida. Tragically, Hurricane Andrew flooded the property in 1992, destroying the mansion and ruining more than 18,000 bottles in the wine cellar. After a lengthy restoration, the estate now offers nature tours of its hardwood hammocks and endangered pine rockland forests, where you can see native plant and wildlife--including spotted skunks, gray foxes and bobcats.
