Horrendous Dining Experience – An anticipated enjoyable dinner with friends ended with a stomach-churning confrontation! Four of us, all octogenarians, went to Snappers for what we thought would be an evening of good company and good food. One of the reasons we chose Snappers was because of the coupons that we snipped from the local paper, advertising a $5 discount for each person. After being seated, our waitress came to take our order and we gave her the coupons. She took them with a smile and proceeded to take our order. We enjoyed a lovely meal and asked for the check. That was when the trouble began.

Our server kindly, with embarrassment, told us that she was told that our discount coupons were not going to be accepted after all, but she wasn't given and explanation as to why. We asked to speak with owner, Sally, who came over to our table and explained that there had been a mistake, and that the coupons had been printed in error and would not be honored. Having been in the retail business ourselves for many, many years, we were sympathetic to these types of mistakes that can and do happen but, as business owners, we always took responsibility for these mishaps. With that in mind, we told her that we felt that it was really her responsibility to honor the coupons. Apparently, she did not share our moral fiber and insisted that we pay the bill in full. We continued to question the fairness of that decision, stating that there was no visible signage outside the restaurant mentioning the errant coupons, no inserts in the menus, and that even our server didn't know about not accepting the coupons until we questioned the amount of the check. The owner still would not take responsibility, brusquely insisting once again that we must pay the full amount. As a matter of principle, we stood our ground and refused to pay our bill unless the coupons were honored.

An ugly confrontation took place at that point, which we did our best to keep quiet in order to avoid disturbing the other diners. The owner became hostile and abusive, and called the police! While waiting for the police to arrive, we noticed that the owner and her hostess began putting inserts into all the menus, informing customers that the discount coupons would not be honored. She even went outside and told all the people waiting in line about the coupons and handed them the inserts. After hearing our story, the police officer was extremely sympathetic with the injustice of the situation, but as this was not a criminal case, said there was nothing he could do. He advised us to pay the bill, which we reluctantly did, and and then if we wished, look into legal. We decided not to take legal action, which would most likely be a long and tedious endeavor, but instead to inform our friends, family, and other would-be diners of our horrendous experience.

This whole ordeal is ludicrous in so many ways. For one, we are all elders in our 80s, some of us having high blood pressure and heart problems, and the stress of the evening certainly was an unnecessary toll on our health. In fact most of the clientele of Snappers are senior citizens! Secondly, and most ridiculously, the amount of money in question was a measly $20 in total. Seriously, all that fuss over $20? Ideally, the whole experience could have been handled very smoothly. The owner could have graciously come to our table, explained the coupon error to us with a smile and a laugh, taken responsibility for the mistake, and honored our coupon, after which she could have taken steps to ensure that her future customers were notified of the situation by posting signage, putting inserts in menus, etc. Oh, well, so much for ideals.

It is with sadness in our hearts, after having dined at Snappers for several enjoyable years, that we have decided never to set foot in there again!
