My Five star favorate restaurant – I do lots of travel because of my job.
When I go somewhere and found one of restaurant that I like that makes my whole trips happy. Matoi sushi is the one of two thumbs up and my favorate five star restaurant I would recommand to anyone who visiting Tampa!
Thanks to Mr. Sam, the owner:)
Excellent Sushi! – I'm a sushi fanatic and have tried almost every single sushi restaurant in Tampa. Not only are the rolls excellent, but sashimi is always fresh. I've recently become a regular customer of Matoi's and I'm pleased with the food every single time. Korean food is also very tasty and traditional. This is my favorite sushi place in Tampa so far.
not bad – went on valentines day with my girlfriend. there was a nice atmosphere, we ended up in a booth in the corner. the food was good, though it cost about as much as other sushi places, so not exactly cheap. the only things we got were sushi rolls, so can't comment on the rest of the food. the special roll (bottom of the menu, description is "surprise") was actually pretty good, though i imagine it changes from time to time. i would go back again, though probably not too often simply because of the price.
Could be Better – My wife and I found this place by accident and decided to try it. First time we noticed a dank smell in the place but we were hungry so we ordered. The sushi and rolls are very good, but we've had better elsewhere for the same $$$. We've hit this place a few more times since then and noticed the customer service getting progressively worse. The guy doing all the waiting seems to be more interested in checking out the girls there. Last time we waited and waited for our drinks while others that came in after us got served their drinks - doesn't take much to just fill a glass with coke so it was unacceptable. So we got our drinks and food at the same time. Then we noticed when my wife's order was ready before mine, he set it down unattended on a regular table for a good 8 mins while customers are entering and leaving, walking right past the food. The guy there needs to keep his mind focused on serving the customers and off the chicks. He even ignored us when we called him to ask for our drinks, then he acted like he forgot or that we didnt' order drinks in the first place. The sushi is good, and the place is definitely worth a visit but service sucks.
5 Stars??? – I don't know how this restaurant got rated 5 stars. At best, I would give it 2 stars... AT BEST!
I was curious if I was the only one that had this opinion, so I browsed a few of the other reviews. It seems that there are people who loved the place, and others that did not like it at all. I fall into the latter category. I was unimpressed by the service and the sushi.
I won't be going back.
ABSOLUTELY IN LOOOOOOVE – ALL I CAN SAY IS "WOW" !!!! SUSHI WAS AWSOME! I DONT WANT TO BASH ON THE OTHER SUSHI RESTAURANTS IN TAMPA BUT YOU NEED TO STEP UP!!! ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS RESTAURANT IS THE BEST IVE HAD IN A WHILE! I JUST MOVED TO TAMPA FROM NEW YORK AND DESPARATELY NEEDED TO FIND A GREAT SUSHI PLACE AND I FINALLY DID! "MATOIS" SERVICE WAS FAST AND FRIENDLY FOOD WAS SOO GOOD I COULDNT STOP EATING! AS MY HUSBAND AND I WAS SITTING EATING OUR SUSHI I SAW A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF DISHES COME OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND AS THEY WERE SERVING IT TO THERE CUSTOMERS MY HUSBAND AND I WOULD SIT THERE ASKING OUR WAITRESS "EXCUSE ME WHAT IS THAT? EXCUSE ME NOW WHAT IS THAT?" HAHA WE HAD FUN THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND KIND TO US AND TO EVERYONE ELSE! I WOULD DEF RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO EVERYBODY! NEXT TIME WE GO WERE ORDERING NOT JUST SUSHI BUT DIFFERENT THINGS OFF THE MENU EACH TIME! THANK YOU MATOI!!!!
SLOPPY – I heard from a coworker that Matoi had been around for many many years... so I dropped in one night with my husband to check it out. All I can say is that both my husband and I were not one bit impressed by the food, the service, or the place! First of all, parking is limited and situated right on a busy highway; second, the service (or lack of) is under par; most importantly, the sushi is... sloppy (for the lack of a better word). I am a sucker for sushi, so I have tried a lot of places around town, and Matoi is not a place that I will be returning to. It could be that I went on a "bad" night. But, I definitely don't think I would want to return to a place that might be inconsistent in the quality of food and/or service. I would recommend Yoko's. It's close to Matoi in distance, but far ahead in the quality & taste!
Back, and better than pre-fire – I go to Matoi at least once a week for lunch. Friendly, fast service puts this place at the top of my list. Liked it before the fire put them out of commission for awhile, but now that they're back, they are better than ever.
The atmosphere is very clean (new), comfortable, and it's a great place whether you're in the mood for great sushi or Korean comfort foods like Bulgogi or Dolsot Bibimbap. Kimchi is good here too.
yay there finally re-open!!! – im sooo happy matoi is back in business! ive been craving good sushi and have tried elsewhere but not as good as my favorite place MATOI sushi! i have recently re-visited them and have noticed they hired a new staff a waiter who is absolutely hilarious and extremely nice! with lots of smiles and a great attitude! but he lacks in speaking english but tries his best!!! and tells funny jokes making me feel welcomed! i wish and hope the best for this restaurant and stays open forever!!!!
great sushi and awesome environment – I've been going to this Sushi Restaurant since I was in the womb. I go at least every two weeks, well not since the fire but still. Every time I walk in it's instant calm and sometimes yes the waitresses can be a little impatient but it mostly cause their trying so hard to get everybody's orders out ASAP. The sushi has never disappointed and I love their Volcano roll and Miso soup. I've tried other places while they are closed but every time I find myself comparing and Matoi has always won. Even their Unsweet tea is better. I've had my last 3 birthday parties there and the staff even bought me drinks for my 21st. I make sure I take every friend to this place and will continue to do so.
