Humiliated and Degraded! – I want to make very clear that I do not want to give this place even one star. I have never in my life in any restaurant, store, otherwise been treated the way I was treated at this place. Before I lay out the details I only have one regret that in the heat of the moment I did not get the name of the guy who treated us so badly- I really wish I had. He was tallish- maybe 40 blondish hair. Who knows- he could own the place. And this is not about the food- we were not given the chance to eat.

So my aunt is visiting me from out of town and she generously offered to take me and my husband out to dinner. I wanted her to have a nice sit down dinner and since we had never tried Altobeli's before we thought we'd check it out and it's in the neighborhood. I call 8:00pm on Saturday and ask if they have any tables available. The guy on the phone was like "We are crazy busy" So I say "So are you not taking reservations?" He says "Well maybe like 9:30" So I say "Okay let me check with my group and I'll call you back.". . .That was okay with everyone so I called back. 3 times over 10 minutes, no one picked up. Went to voicemail. That should have been my first clue. I then asked my husband to try. He got someone on the phone. I heard the conversation. Someone took our reservation. 3 people for 9pm. I was surprised- Awesome- better than 9:30! Okay. . .

We walk in at 9pm on the dot. We stand in the small entryway waiting. . . .and waiting. No one is at the hostess desk. . .Finally aforementioned guy who I don't know his name ("guy") brisks past us- "Can I help you" Husband: "We have a reservation at 9pm" Guy: "What do you mean you have a reservation (scoffing and checking computer) I've got nothing on here- we're not even taking reservations anymore who did you talk to." Husband: "I don't know, a guy" Guy: "What do you mean a guy?? Who? What was his name?.".Husband: "I don't know, I didn't ask and he didn't tell me his name." Guy: "Are you sure you called the right place? You couldn't have called here." . .He kept going on sarcastically and it practically felt like he was accusing us of lying or crashing the restaurant. . .My aunt who I was trying to show a good time whispered to me "This man is just being disgusting.". . .I was humiliated. I have never been so humiliated in my life. Standing in that tight entryway- loads of people in the full restaurant talking and laughing and having a good time and he was absolutely degrading us. I interjected and told the guy "You are being rude. And you should not be talking to us like this. You shouldn't be arguing with US about a reservation. Your conversation should be with your STAFF!." His whole attitude and demeanor was sarcastic, rude, and incredibly condescending. He finally said- "Well if you want to stand there for 20 minutes I'll see if we can get you a table but I mean- we're not taking any tables." I told him "Don't worry I'm not eating here." and walked out.

So we all walked out feeling burned, humiliated and insulted. By the time we got to the car my aunt was upset and said you know, I am going to go back and get his name. So she and I went back and stood in the small entrance. No one came back. The guy saw us and made eye contact but did not come back to talk to us. Even though we were burning from the insult it kept getting more insulting that we were being ignored so I told her he's getting the pleasure of watching us stand here so let's go.

I refuse to ever go back there. I will not give them a second chance. All he had to do was say "I'm sorry I don't see your reservation, we are fully booked is there any way you could come back at another time." Instead it was an absolute accusatory assault that I have never experienced in my entire life and just can't believe nothing can be done about it.

Worst Italian Food Ever – My friend Robin decided to have her 50th birthday there. She never mentioned how bad the service was or the food. So we get there and our waiter had no personality at all. Remind you that it is a piano bar where the waiter and waitresses sing. He was rude and we ordered an antipasto and it came with triscits and crackers. No meat except for ham. it was so sad looking. Then came the entrees. I had veal with pasta. The veal was so tough and tasted horrible. Some of my friend's food was ice cold. When they warmed it up again the plate was hot but not the food. The owner came over and did not even apologize for the food or the horrible service. I will never go back.

Worse customer service for a "fine" restaurant. – Great for fund-raising. However, customer service is very poor. We/I have never been so insulted and treated badly anywhere in the world, except here. Since we we didn't make reservations for the fund-raising show, we were seated at the dining area. After an hour, the hostess finally came and asked for our orders. Two friends ordered entrees, while another friend and I ordered each a glass of wine and a cake. Upon hearing this, she paused and asked us annoyingly (with some clicking sound) why we were not ordering dinner. And I asked if that's a problem. She hesitated and retorted that she seated us at the dining table for 6 people because she thought we were all eating dinner. We told her she could move us to a smaller table, as there were about 4 more empty tables. And she said "never mind." We as customers were really very patient with her that night. If it were other customers, she could have faced an embarassing situation already. After that, one of the new waiters took over and he served us satisfactorily thereafter. No apology was received.

Great entertainment - good food - slow service – As the song of a hugely popular, now syndicated show use to say...You wanna go where everybody knows your name. This is the place, down to the mahogany wood and brass bar foot rails. You won't find better entertainment and you can't complain. The entertainment is free. It's open mike, but don't think Karaoke. These are pros with lungs of gold, with the exception of the occasional karaoke kid wandering in. The owners watch over the restaurant and actively help out to service you. But when the place gets jam packed on Saturdays, service suffers. You can't dwell on it, though. Staff (some who perform as well) and owners make you feel like a VIP, so you overlook the slow service. Come prepared to meet new friends. And go slow on the drink. Your server may be a while as they serenade you in blue.

Cozy, entertaining and satisfying – In addition to the always entertaining show provided by the open-mic regulars, the service has consistently been excellent at this cozy, suburbian jewel. As it can get loud if there are large parties, try to request a table near the piano if you don't mind the smoking section. But, even if you can't always hear the music, the food is great and the atmosphere is comfortable. Take a minute to notice the autographed celebrity photos adorning the walls.

Food's okay - ambience is very nice – I labelled this my "first-date" restaurant. The service is nice and unobtrusive. The restaurant has wonderful atmosphere - very homy, comfortable, and quiet so you can have a conversation (if you enjoy that sort of thing). The live piano/jazz music is terrific. They have a good bar (and good bartenders, which should go without saying, but some places make terrible drinks).

The food itself is above average - I wouldn't go anywhere near calling it the best in Atlanta - but it's good. And definitely good enough to carry the night with all of the other positives about the place.

not good value – I read the reviews here, and I thought I was in for a great treat. Boy, was I disappointed. The entree was pretty good, but the appetizers, salads, and dessert were mediocre. Carrabba's has much better calamari and tirimisu, the chocolate cake that I got was dry, and the house salad was composed entirely of *white* iceberg lettuce (no greens). There was a huge wedding party in one of the rooms, so it was extremely noisy, and I couldn't hear the piano at all. I didn't really missed anything though, because the music that I overheard when I walked by the piano was not very good. I guess the quality varies since it was "open mike" night. The only thing that was good was the service. Overall, it was not a good value. I would not go there again.

ATL's best Italian food & Piano Bar?!?! – YOU'D BETTER BELIEVE IT! The entertainment is wonderful! The talent in the place is incredible. And if the entertainment isn't a good enough reason to go to this place...the food most definitely is. If you want some of the BEST authentic Italian dishes in Atlanta, go to Altobeli's.
