YUCK AND GOD AWFUL – I had always wanted to try The Southern Skillet because its hard to find good southern food. So I thought, 'Lets go to a place that has been around for awhile and lets read the reviews before we go'. I logged on, read the reviews and in my opinion, people really didn't say bad things about the place. So I took a chance and I always try to find good things to discuss about a restaurant but this place made me sick, literally.

I went to the one Roswell and at first glance it was horrible. It looked very run down but I convinced my wife to try because the food is probably great. As soon as we walked through the doors, the smell of old wood nearly knocked us out. My wife commented, "It smells old and musty in here". Again, I convinced her to take a seat and lets try something easy. We ordered the Chicked Fried Chicken, Chicken Fried Steak and our sides were Man n' Cheese, Rice/Gravy and Green Beans.

It started off ok. I thought the Chicken Fried Steak was decent and the Rice/Gravy was ok. My wife didn't feel the same way. Her food was barely warm and the Chicken tasted like it had been sitting there for awhile. Not to mention it was very dry with a strange taste. A taste as if they had used the same grease to fry the fish. It was NASTY. I am from the south and I come from a family of Southern Cooks but this MESS that I had was a disgrace to Southern Cooking.

I could go on and on but I think I made my point. If you want real southern cooking, I suggest going to South Atlanta. The Southern Skillet is not real southern food. They need a makeover. CALL GORDON RAMSEY

Lost something over the years – Having lived in the Roswell area for the past 16 years, my family has been to the folksy Southern Skillet several times before, but about 8 years have passed since our last visit. This has always been a fairly popular place with the natives for their "meat and three." It has a cluttered country store atmosphere dating back to 1980, when such a look was popular.

My husband and I were recently in the area and thought we'd visit it for a late breakfast. It was immediately apparent that the place needed work -- the leaded glass panes in the front doors were actually falling out, the ceiling tiles were stained and dirty and with the exception of a few more license plates on the walls, the place looked like absolutely no changes or maintenance had occurred since our last visit. The whole place looked and felt grubby.

We both had blueberry pancakes, which were large, rather short of blueberries and sucked up syrup like sponges. The sweet tea was good and frequently refilled.

I'm sure the owner of the run-down shopping center in which the Skillet is located is waiting for the economy to improve to get that buy-out offer for redevelopment, but come on, Southern Skillet owner, don't wait for it to fall down around you before spending a dime to fix the place up -- these days Roswell has way too many clean places with dependably good food and prominently displayed Board of Health inspection reports to ever return here again.

Excellent Breakfast after those drinking nights! – Reminds me of the old time five and dime stores full of old time memories, signs, AUTHENTIC collectibles. Seemed like many locals visit, eat, and socialize. Was sitting eating breakfast and i saw at least 5 different people stroll in and speak with others that they knew who were also in the restaurant.

Need to check out their extensive lunch men as well soon.

Best Southern Fare for the Price – Quaint, Restaurant is full of nostalgic signs and memorabilia from both national and local businesses. Brings back memories of true southern dives that are filled with locals, excellent value, and good old fashioned southern fare - Much better than any chain such as cracker barrel or folks. Biscuits and Cornbread are best the earlier you get there, breakfast is surprisingly served all day, and you cant beat their fried chicken and vegetables!! They even serve old classics like Calves & Chicken Livers...mmmm!!

Lost in the Shuffle... – One of those independents that get lost in the shuffle vs the exposure of big chains....Had the fried chicken and was honestly the best that i've ever had. Veggies were excellent as well as husband's chicken and dumplings. Located in a area of Roswell that is going down hill (near the beautiful historic square - which is definitely worth a visit), but was told that the area used to be the center of Roswell activity. Quaint atmosphere if you get past the bad shopping center exterior. We definitely need more of these types of family restaurants! I dont know what the other review was about...maybe they were yankees w/o any real knowledge of good home cookin' - guess they're used to processed food, lol!!

You have to go at least once! – Its not quaint or fancy, but this place is the best southern breakfast in the area! A true part of Roswell history.

Dissapointed – As I have eaten here for years, it used to be great. Now, though, just the idea of associating the word clean and this resturant make me want to laugh. It is sad, but the food is just as bad as their idea of proper cleanliness. I do not know, why, but it has taken a sharp turn for the worse.

Best "Southern" food in Roswell – The Southern Skillet is a great restaurant that seems to be missed by most people here. They have many delicious items that rotate daily. Especially good is the squash casserole and the roast beef, but those are just a couple of examples. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended.

Not that Southern!! – This visit was the first for my family and I. The food was over salted (could hardly taste it for the salt), the cornbread was made earlier in the day or the prior night. The meatloaf was in a word, terrible. The only edible thing that we found was the banana pudding, if you could get past the black banana's. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Editorial Review – Southern-style breakfast (served all day long) and other home-style specialties dominate the menu at this casual diner.
