Extensive and rare archival collection chronicles the lives of African-Americans. – The Library
The first Southern public library to focus on the Black Diaspora, the Auburn Avenue Research Library is filled with information about the experiences of people of African descent. Its unique reference and historical collection--36,000 books, 3,000 periodicals and thousands more in microfiche, audio and video cassettes--is spread throughout the first two floors of the downtown branch. Peruse original documents, photographs and manuscripts while researching the records of the NAACP or Atlanta's former mayor Andrew Young. The library's computerized system can help patrons quickly access materials.

The History

The Atlanta Public Library system opened the Auburn Avenue branch in 1921 for the city's black citizens. Its first collection, the Negro History Collection of Non-Circulating Books, was established in 1934. The collection has expanded over the years and has since been renamed the Samuel W. Williams Collection on Black America. This branch welcomed Atlanta's first black professional librarian in the Atlanta Public Library system.
