Editorial Review for McKinnon's Louisiane Restaurant – by Michael Alvear

The Scene
Located in a rather tacky Buckhead strip mall, McKinnon's is more of a hit with budget-conscious Buckhead old-timers than the young and beautiful. Inside, the bar's dark, smoky colors and plush modern sectionals are a jarring but welcome break from the red, white and pink chintz curtains that contribute to the dining room's old-time New Orleans feel.

The Food
The hits are as big as the misses in this moderately priced New Orleans-inspired seafood house. Crab claws piquante are battered and tossed in a mildly spicy cream sauce, and they're addictive. Blackened chicken livers with grilled andouille sausage are super--the spiciness of the sausage together with the density of the liver combines for intense flavor. You can order this dish as an appetizer or an entree. But other dishes strike out. Grouper Louisiane is dragged down by soggy almonds, and the barbecue hot-peppered shrimp are limp and unimpressive. For dessert, skip the traditional bread pudding and order the chocolate marquisse, a kind of thick mousse.

Its a little hole-in-the-wall but the Manager Aziz makes it all worth your while. Good food and drinks! Romanic and cozy.

Pros: Good Seafood

I don't think of McKinnon's as a Cajun retaurant, its where we go when we want a quiet, elegantly appointed restaurant with good food (we're especially fond of the seared tuna), professional wait staff, and a full bar at reasonable prices. This is a place where you feel like you're getting real value. It is not a "happening" place, but it is special.

Pros: elegant, quiet, great service, good food, reasonable prices

Cons: ugly on the outside

Prices may seem like a bargain at this Lousiana seafood house, but the food is hit-or-miss.  See the full editorial review.
