A bar fight almost erupts at George's in the 2012 baseball flick "Trouble with the Curve."
Toothsome – The burgers were toothsome! It's a really nice place to hang out and service was awesome.
I loved the burger they served. The patty was huge and the taste was amazing. The staff was accomodating and the service was prompt. I absolutely want to go back.
Go there – Quintessential Virginia Highlands bar/restaurant. I go there to sit outside (when I can get a seat) and enjoy a little sunshine, people watching and a pretty good lunch.
Burgers so good. Really. – Many people think of this bar as dingy, but, to be fair, it is so dark in the back part that it is difficult to tell what is covering everything, so i say, give them the benefit of the doubt.
George's has great burgers, there's no question, and also, immensely difficult trivia. The only downside is Wednesday, when the place is filled with joggers. These people gleefully tell you how far they ran to get there. I can only assume that this is due to the difficulty finding parking around George's (hint: park on Vance or in front of the fire station, there are very few fires these days).
But I came here to speak to you about the burger. So good. And chew slowly, gives you time to think about the trivia answers, and it will make the joggers wait longer for a table. I am giving it 4 starts instead of 5 because means "Run, Don't Walk" and I want to discourage that type of behavior.
Sneaky-good burgers in an unassuming, cozy VaHi pub. – In Short
For years George’s was known as this rough-around-the-edges joint, a sort of hidden low-key pub lodged among trend-happy eateries off North Highland. But over the years, the restaurant has stepped up their aesthetic game without losing that endearing vibe. Cozy wooden booths illuminated by classic poker table lamps make it feel like a VaHi burger spot should be. And the burgers are sneakily some of the best in Atlanta. Given an option for a 5oz or 8oz burger and served simply on a soft wheat bun, George’s unleashes a plethora of creative options without looking like they are trying to hard to get too fancy. The Mexican comes with fresh guac and shredded cheddar, a jalepeno-Dijon burger gets some added zip from horseradish sauce while the classic mushroom and Swiss is hard to argue against. Fries and rings are pretty standard but the burger is why you came.
The burger was good, but... – .....I would say the place needs a bit of an overhaul. Felt kind of gross. But for what the place is, it was fine.
Best Burger in Atlanta? – Best burgers in Atlanta, great dive place in the VA Highlands to take your kids. Even better during the summer, when havin a burger and a brew can't be beat!
George's great burgers and two other great places – George's, the Vortex, and Ann's Hamburger stand are my three favorites in Atlanta for burgers.
All make a good homestyle burger, like those cooked in the old days by mom. BIg, juicy, good sized bun and just about anything you want on them. I like to pick my own stuff, but roasted red bell pepper adds a lot to mine, along with red onion.
Best good old fashioned restaurant and beer place – I love George's. The family atmosphere is the best in town. I always see people I know. The service is great but it's not the Ritz. What you get at George's is normal food and certainly a malted beverage. I like to get the Char Grilled Chicken sandwich with swiss and coleslaw on the side. And a beer in a bottle. How normal is that? I love it. It's fun to get organic buffalo mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes and purple basil, etc. (Floataway Cafe.) but I can't do that every day.
When I need to see friends, unwind, walk around and see the shops, go to Paolo's for gelato and take the kids.
That's where I love George's. Don't miss this very traditional Atlanta restaurant. When you finally go, you'll say - What was I waiting for? This is great!
Best Place in Virginia Highlands – I've been going to George's for years, live in the area. It is always great service and food. The burgers are the best in Atlanta. Family friendly. Also, runners gather here after their run on Wed. nights. Nice outdoor seating for summer, spring and fall.
