Editorial Review for Fontaine's Oyster Bar – by Michael Longshore
The Scene
Dominating the long, narrow main room, a dark, flight-deck sized bar beckons to New South up-and-comers with a whisper of eternal carnival. An open raw bar up front provides an additional focal point. With the great French doors open in the spring, a roaring crowd spills out onto the sidewalk.
The Food
As much a happy hour destination as it is a serious restaurant, and as a restaurant more of a snacks place than serious sit-down. Just don't come here with dreams of red beans and rice or serious etouffee. Have some fresh oysters (winter), peel-n-eats, a fried shrimp basket and some hushpuppies.

The food is very good, but the bar is frequently crowded. The fresh oysters are excellent, the fried seafood PoBoys are not as good as other places. The margaritas are horrible, they use very cheap mix.

This was a great recent find for me. It has a cozy pub feel and I can only imagine how fantastic the back patio is in the warmer months. The service staff was very helpful and attentive. The menu is fairly standard, but the food itself is far from it. I highly recommend the freshly made spinach dip appetizer, and I do mean FRESH. Also, the grilled chicken sandwich reminded me of backyard summer cook-outs - perfect! If you are looking for a completely unpretentious locale, this is it.
Pros: parking in back and no valet before 5pm!
