Philly Cheesesteaks, yes please! Get it with extra onions, mushrooms, cheese and jalapeno peppers!
Worst cheese steak sandwich EVER – The cheese steak sandwich "with everything" includes steak minced to a fine mush, grilled onions and mustard and ketchup! Good grief! Who puts mustard and ketchup on a cheese steak? It was completely inedible. The one bright spot was the shaved ice. I just love a Coke with shaved ice. If I ever go back I'll try a hot dog, how bad can you mess that up?
Once Great Steak/Cheese Joint Is On The Slide! Other Area Options Now! – From the mid-seventies, through the mid-eighties, Woody's was always a pleasure to drop-in, before heading to the park. Of course more competition has moved in, and the face of Midtown is changing--closing of Silver Grill, Backstreet, etc. The Steak/Cheese Philly was the calling card. As was the terrific Banana Shakes! But poor service, poor food quality is taking a toll. Parking has always been a problem. But that great JJ. of L.A. sign, is still a landmark at this intersection.
Very rude service at Woody's - You lost our business. – We were at Woody's today for lunch and had an unfortunate experience. We are regular customers and love the philly cheese steaks. When placing our order (with one of the men that is always there, maybe the owner) we needed to change the cheese on one of the sandwiches and the man got very upset. Understand this wasn't a change after we received the food this was while he was writing the order down. He proceeds to tell us how he can't stand customers, he doesn't like people and he doesn't like taking orders. When I looked shocked that he said that, he continues with "don't look at me like that". He went on to confirm with my husband that he wants provolone cheese and my husband said "that is fine". He said "I need a yes or no answer from you, not that is fine." What is unfortunate is that we will never eat at Woody's again. I refuse to eat at a place that would allow someone to be so disrespectful to customers. You hate customers - bottom line, you shouldn't be in business!!!
Retro cheese steak stand draws the Midtown lunch crowd. – The Scene
Wedged into a sharply canting asphalt hillside, this red cinderblock stand sports splashy, cartoon-art billboards and a small, partially enclosed patio. In the tiny main room recycled bus seats are jammed around heavily lacquered camp tables; fans circulate a warm, sticky breeze. Imagine away the traffic outside and you're at the funnel cake booth at the county fair.
Best known for its Philly cheese steak, Woody's also serves six kinds of subs, two kinds of sausage and a "fat" hot dog, plus shakes, floats and sundaes. While the centerpiece cheese steak rates as a solid hangover cure, the Italian sub (salami, provolone, lots of oil, vinegar and oregano) or the Italian sausage (a messy triumph of grilled onions, peppers and "special sauce") turn out to be better sandwiches. Milkshakes are nothing special, but the orange freeze (heavy on the vanilla bean ice cream) is a modest retro pleasure.
Best Philly Cheestake – go early & take your patience with you. It's worth the wait. Try the Philly Cheese with everything. Incredible!
Simple Pleasure – Friendly owner and long time business owner who knows how to treat customers. You're always greeted with a smile and once you become a regular your ticket number is replaced with your name being called when your food is ready! Woody's is my regular Saturday lunch spot!
Melt in your mouth – These cheesesteaks literally melt in your mouth. Tear off a chunk of chewy bread and prepare to enjoy a savory mix of chopped steak, cheese and onions. The restaurant's proximity to Piedmont Park and Midtown and Virginia-Highlands makes it a convenient place to stop for lunch.
