A fast-growing visual and performing arts center in the heart of the city. – The History
The Atlanta Memorial Arts Center was founded in 1968 to commemorate local art supporters who died in a plane crash in France. Today, the Woodruff Arts Center is the top regional resource for visual and performing arts. The Alliance Theatre Company, Atlanta College of Art, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the High Museum of Art and the 14th Street Playhouse generate the energy in this Midtown arts complex.
Italian architect Renzo Piano designed plans for expansion and renovation that just might transform the center into a world-class arts destination. The metamorphosis, scheduled for completion in 2005, will create an urban arts village with a European sensibility. At last--a real restaurant, piazzas, walkways, glass facades and outdoor sculpture installations to animate the center and connect it to the rest of Midtown.
