Pain in the Scalp – I was headed to a wedding and needed to find a place to get my hair braided. I checked in with these ladies and their prices seemed reasonable.

The shop is dingy and dimly lit. I should've taken that as a clue. The woman who washed my hair wasn't thorough or gentle. She yanked and tugged her way through. Although, I'm not surprised she wasn't terribly gentle as she was washing in the dark. The teeny room the wash tub was in had NO lights. I should've run out, but it was so late and I had a wedding to go to.

The washer hands me a towel to dry my hair. As I pick it up clumps off hair are stuck to it. As if it had been recently used to sweep of the counter after a haircut. "Excuse me? This one is dirty." No apologies. Just more gruffness.

My washer is also my stylist, most regretably. She starts to yank through my natural hair with the comb at the end of the dryer. She get pissed when it doesn't work. She hands me the dryer and demand I dry my own hair. Part of why she was unable to do it, was because she was trying also to talk on the phone.

I explain to her what I want and she starts. For some reason she applied humongous amounts of that weird brown-black gel to each twist. By the end it was a super tightly braided, crunchy hairdo. It look nice though. I tried vainly to loosen the tightness at my hairline.

When I finely took the twist down I saw that my hair had been pulled so tight it had come loose. And the sort of off-center V-shape that had been braided in was a semi-permanent feature of my hairline. It's took me like a year to grow my hair back.

Don't go. No matter what. It's better to look busted. Skip it.

visit was Summer of 2006 I think.
