GIM built my customized new computer within 2 hours! – We moved to Charleston S.C. from Atlanta 5 years ago and missed GIM Computers very much because there's no store like GIM in Charleston.
Before visiting Atlanta, I researched the newest computer technology on-line and checked out GIM's new website. Upon ordering my new PC, I asked Ms. GIM's opinion of what I should get this time. I trust her because she helped me built my previous PC with great parts selection within my budget.
Easily, we picked a silent chassis, a core i7 processor, WD Black 1TB HDD, and Windows 7 Pro. for my new PC. And because of our tight out-of-town schedule, GIM built my new PC and loaded Windows 7 within 2 hours while we were waiting.
I know I can always count on GIM, and they did it again!
They are quick and helpful. – Twice we have gotten viruses on our (small) business computer - only computer for our business. They have quickly diagnosed and told us that we have to restore, then quickly done it. (Much more quickly than at the big box technology giant we used to use!) They are responsive when we call.
They have put our data back after restoration. We have never had a problem with them, and they are polite. They are quite reasonable in their fees too. I definitely plan to keep using them, although it's a bit of a drive to get to them.
If you want to be belittled & berated, go ahead... – This place literally reminded of that skit from Saturday Night Live where the company IT guy YELLS at people who don't know as much about computers. I have not been treated so rudely in a long time by any retail business. The owner of the store is scary. No thanks.
Best Computer Store Ever – The prices are always the best. I've been shopping at GIM for about 12 years. I'm an IT guy, and they are able to give me what I need. I also send lots of my non-technical people there and they are always happy.
Never a Problem – I have purchased motherboards, memory, and hard drives form GIM.
Have also used their repair service.
I have never had a problem with the parts or service.
The owners have always been nice to me!
Horrible Customer Service Screaming Fools – I would not depend on these guys. Same type of experience that you see in the rest of the reviews on here. You bring them the stuff to fix for their expertise and then when a hardware part goes down they say get some computer training. Wouldn't that put them out of business? I would not do business here.
Very Reasonable – I have been purchasing computer systems and computer parts from GIM Computers for more than 18 years. They have always had very competitive prices and they are extremely knowledgeable. Companies don't stay in business for 20+ years if they aren't doing a good job and making their customers happy. There have been a few times over the years that I needed to return a computer component, and each time GIM Computers has allowed me to return or exchange the item hassle free...of course, I have never tried to return anything outside of their posted terms and conditions. Whether your computer needs to be fixed or just upgraded, Jim Cheng is very knowledgeable and always willing to give good advice.
Being a business owner myself, I can tell you that there are always a few customers that think they are the exception to every rule. They think that store policies are more like "guidelines" than actual policies, and they are "surprised" when they aren't allowed to return something after several weeks or months even when the policy states 10 days. In addition, I can tell you that while most people will take the time to write a bad review, few people tend to take time out of their busy schedules to write a good review.
After reading some of the reviews here, it is apparent that some of the reviewers don't understand the way that warranties work in the electronics/computer industry. Basically, components come with a manufacturer's warranty. The store that sells the component can either offer no additional warranty or they can offer their own warranty in addition to the manufacturer's warranty. If the manufacturer offers a 3 year warranty and the store offers a 90 day warranty then that means that if the part fails within the first 90 days then you can take the component back to the store for a replacement; however, if the component fails, say, after a year, then you will need to contact the manufacturer directly to get the component replaced under warranty.
Great Store! Quicker repairs than most computer repair shops. – GIM Computers is a great computer shop for parts, new or used computers, and computer repair. They have everything you could need to build a computer for the home or office. They have great customer service, and Jim keeps great customer relations as I have seen in the past. They have great prices on parts on the repair services are top quality and quicker than most competitors. I would recommend GIM computers to anyone in need of a computer, a part, or repair.
Horrible customer service – I bought a motherboard and CPU from GIM, as well as a video card. He booted the system up to BIOS, and claimed that everything was fine. As I went home and installed it in my computer, it turns out the ethernet port was bad. It was obviously a hardware issue, as I could install the drivers fine, and even downloaded the latest driver with no success. Later that night, the entire system stopped working. I tried the processor in another MB, and had the same issues. I took the entire computer into a store for a diagnostic checkout, and everything (including my power supply) checked out. They determined it was either the MB or the processor. I called GIM back and gave them the story, and was trying to get either the CPU, or both swapped. I was then berrated on the phone by them, and THEN told that since they didn't install the system, that they would not warranty any of the parts. I was told by the store owner that he was SURE my power supply burned out the processor and motherboard, even though he had not looked at it!! He went on to tell me that USUALLY when a MB and/or processor goes bad, they ALWAYS say it's the power supply. Yet, he never suggested a power supply to me when I came to the store. He also never told me that he would not cover any of the parts he sold me, if I did not install them myself. On top of this, he was insulting me on the phone, asking me why I was "scared" to call the manufacturer, and mocked me by saying "Oh, if you know everything so well then why did you have to take it to a third party to have them diagnose it? You seem so good, like you know everything." This was a horrible experience, and even if they could not cover the part, I should not have been treated this way.
Horrible customer service – I brought a perfectly fine 5 year old computer in to have my data backed up, the hard drive wiped clean and Windows XP reloaded. The computer worked fine when I brought it in, not so when I went to pick it up.
The tech backed up my data, wiped my hard drive clean and then discovered he couldn't figure out how to reload XP on the hard drive. They claim a hardware error: what a coincidence, I've been using the machine for 5 years and now all of a sudden it's developed a hardware error. They called to let me know that it was going to be more expensive to fix than they estimated and wanted to know if I wanted to just buy a newer used computer. Since the computer was fine when I brought it in, I told them to just give me my data and I would re load myself.
When I picked up the computer it was dead as a doorbell. It wouldn't recognize the floppy, hard drive or cd drive. What a deal, I bring in a perfectly fine computer, pay $50 to have the data backed up and leave with a 10 lb brick.
Absolutely horrible customer service, wouldn't accept responsibility for their mistake and were generally rude and totally un-customer focused.. These guys would be in serious trouble if they had any local competition.
