WORST Dive Bar with Hollywood prices – I heard this was "the first karaoke bar in the US" which was intriguing ... although my first impression once entering the bar was "what am I going to catch from this place?" Possibly lice from the fact that Karaoke-ers share hats, wigs, etc ...? Or the fact that our booth was duct taped together, everything looked old and nasty, especially the random carpets and creepy pictures of N'Sinc in the bathroom... not to mention that the karaoke host came out of the bathroom while I was waiting and informed us that the toilet was tempermental and needed "some time" before it would flush. After a few drinks though, the bar became more charming and the horrible house sound for the actual karaoke-ers became more tolerable. But the night came to a bitter end when our tab ... must I mention there were 4 of us? ... was a horrific $300!! We didn't EAT anything but STALE pretzels mind you and we all went home walking a straight line. The weekend before this I actually went to some lame posh place in Hollywood and had DINNER WITH 6 PEOPLE ... and our tab was $300. Our only mistake this night was not knowing they charged $9 for shots, $7 for beers and god knows what they charged for my friends' watered down drinks ... and the fact that we even tried this overated dive bar in the first place! When I hear and SEE dive bar ... I expect dive prices. Oh yeah, there was also a $5 cover just to be there! So, in my opinion, if you have a bunch of cash that you're willing to throw out on a mediocre night ... take a cab to Hollywood ... go to an actual NICE place and spend the same. This was RIDICULOUS!!!!
Eh. I went Twice and wouldnt waste my time again! There are better places for Karaoke – They've got a good idea... a place that makes you the star. Stages, wigs, a free dvd of your drunken humiliation. This place is lacking, however, in several areas. The sound system is horrrrrrrible. Most people sound pretty hidious even if they usually sound decent in the shower (haha). The drinks are way over priced. The wait staff and bartenders are commonly pretty bitchy and overly tip motivated. Im a great tipper, but watched some guys who tipped 18% get shunned. 18% is a good tip... get over yourself.
Anyway... There are other places I prefer for Karaoke. Pats Cocktails has an awesome sound system, strong drinks, friendly bartenders. Drinks are super cheap. Had a great time at the Barrel too.
Dimples is just WAY too touristy and overpriced for what it actually is. My advice to them? Get some better sound in there. A little reverb perhaps? lol
"Live Band Karaoke" is currently being performed weekly in the San Fernando Valley by the Top 40 cover band O FeeL YA every Sunday night at The Studio Suite located at 4823 Whitsett Av. Studio City Ca. 91423 (818) 753-8297
And at Paladino's located at 6101 Reseda Blvd. Tarzana, corner of Oxnard CA 91335 (818) 342-1563
WORST EVER!!! – It started as a fun night at a new place, with a friend who also owns a karaoke service. Then we got to the door. $5 cover for a dive bar, and I was told I couldn't wear my hat (wicker cowboy hat, without being given a reason.
We bellied up to the bar, which was relatively empty, but it still took about 15 minutes to get round 1.
We put our names on the Karaoke list, and hung out. After finishing our drinks, we WAITED 15 minutes to get noticed (even though we were still at the bar), and the bartender gave us attitude when we asked for a drink again.
We started noticing people who arrived AFTER getting onstage BEFORE us, so I asked the hostess. I was informed that we were X more on the list, but we could get ahead if we tipped her, which I found more than slightly rude.
Back to the drinks... we decided to close out after being BSed by the hostess ("You guys are NEXT on the list") a total of three times. I got MORE attitude from the bartender when I asked her to break it down, as opposed to handing me a ticket with only a total on it. 6 jack & cokes, 2 coronas, one mixed drink and two JD shots, grand total $81, and not even buzzed.
My buddy sang, and I was expecting to go up, only to find they put somebody ELSE in line. "My boss toled me to", stated Karaoke Hostess. I blew it. Heated words with the hostess and her boss (TOTAL letch!), and as we were leaving, THE BARTENDER FOLLOWED US OUT, and informed me that "15-20% is POLITE for a tip". Oh, the IRONY! I informed her that I would have tipped, had I received prompt, friendly service, but she wasn't worthy of it. I then returned to talk to HER boss, who turned out to be the karaoke boss-letch. In short, he recommended that, since I had such a bad experience, I not return to the place. Needless to say, I won't.
I would only recommend this place if you want cr@p service, a con Karaoke hostess, watered down, overpriced drinks, bartenders with a lousy attitude, and a boss that doesn't care about his clientelle.
Fun karaoke bar – I have been there twice and had a great time both times. It really isn't much of a place to meet new people, you are better off going with a bunch of goofy friends and getting your American Idol on. The drinks are kind of weak. The atmosphere makes for a carefree, casual, good time. The owner is pretty cool too, kind of a flirty old guy, but sweet none-the-less. Also, what is pretty cool is that they have props for when you and your pals go on stage. You get a picture and a DVD of your performance so that you can look back and make fun of your silly drunkeness! Like I said, go with friends to make for a great time!
Overpriced drinks, slow service – My friends and I recently strayed from our regular bar, looking for something new, exciting and close to home on a Friday night. We stumbled across Dimples, well actually I had suggested it, which I regret. I had gone to Dimples 10 years ago and had an awesome time or so I thought. Now that I think about it...I might have been intoxicated before I got there, because who could possibly afford to get drunk at Dimples. The prices are outrageous, the drinks are watered down and the service is soooo slow. I did enjoy the karaoke, which was like watching American Idol...well sorta. We lasted 20 minutes and then we resorted to our old and trusty, The Blue Room, where the drinks are strong and cheap, the bartenders are hot, service is fast and the jukebox...how I love the jukebox.
go early to avoid cover – I looked this place up on the internet before we flew all the way across the country to go there! We could not find it (It is small) until out last night! It was perfect ending a week log trip. We went early....right when they opened on a Monday night, so there was no cover. The staff was very nice, and talented......they let the wait staff sing often. We were there two hours and I was able to sing 4 times......tips help. Be sure to let them know it is your first time and you will get the "virgin" treatment! They gave me a cd of one of my songs...plus a T-shirt! I know my treatment may have been due to the small crowd......but we had a great time.....in fact......we are headed back ti L.A. in February and Dimples is at the top of our list!
Pass the mic with lip-sync virgins and veterans at the country's oldest karaoke bar. – The Scene
Distinguished as the very first karaoke bar in the U.S., Dimples has been allotting tone-deaf warblers their 15 minutes of fame since 1982. Though it sometimes lacks the energy of hipper venues, Dimples offers the full rock star experience thanks to props like funky hats, boas and plastic guitars. With more than 10,000 songs to choose from, you hopefully won't hear anything from "Grease" or Britney Spears twice in one night. Be advised that Dimples broadcasts its karaoke performances on local cable television, as well as providing replays on multiple monitors inside the bar.
People wait all week for their big moment on stage, practicing in the shower, the mirror and sometimes even coordinating clothes with duet partners. That doesn't mean random revelers don't get inspired, and proximity to the studios equates to a lot of after-work industry parties and even the occasional celebrity sighting.
not what I thought it would be – After all the hipe about how great Dimples is, I finally went and was dissapointed at best. $5.00 for a diet coke? come on people, give me a break. After looking through the song list I was left having to sing an altenate, as many newer songs were not avaliable. I went up to sing only to find they had a horrible sound system with no monitors on stage for the singers to hear themselves. Needless to say, my friends and I were dissapointed and won't be returning any time soon. Did I mention that the parking situation was terrible?...
Good Ol' Karaoke – Dimples is OK. A bar and restaurant boasting karaoke and close proximity to NBC studios and the like. The food is average, the drinks tend to be weak and overpriced (about $7-$10 a pop). The best part of the experience has to be the people. There is usually a friendly crowd. The singing is sometimes is awesome but most of the time its so-so. The staff and hostesses keep things crackin' - its one of those places you should check out at least once.
