Cemetary Makes families Suffer – January 21, 2008
COLUMBUS, Georgia --- A Columbus family says they are being forced to rebury their daughter, because of a cemetery plot mixup.
"This mistake hurts, deep inside, it's emotional, it hurts me," said Ester Cavil.
Ester can't hold back her tears when she starts talking about her daughter Cathy.
When Cathy suddenly died last October, Ester bought this plot at Park Hill Cemetery, and buried her daughter in it.
Now Ester says cemetery management is forcing her to move Cathy's body, because they say the plot belongs to someone else.
"It's very deep inside, it hurts me. Because I have to take my daughter again out of the ground. She was a lovely daughter, good in college, good student. Now I have to take her out a second time, I hate this," said Ester. Ester's Pastor, Harry Rodriguez, was at the cemetery office, when he says the employees admitted to the mistake.
He says he doesn't understand why Cathy's body has to be moved. "The cemetery wants to pull the body up, and put her somewhere else because they made the mistake of selling the lot to Ester, which belonged to somebody else, and it's not right," said Rodriguez.
Ester says the cemetery management has offered to refund her $4,700 dollars, pay for another burial, and two free plots. But she says no amount of money can heal her pain, if she has to bury her daughter again.
"Nothing can fix it, it's still taking my daughter out of the ground and bury her a second time, can't fix it," said Ester.
The general manager at Park Hill Cemetery admits there was a mixup with the plots, and that they sold Ester Cavil a plot that belongs to someone else.
He couldn't go into detail about how it happened, but he says they are looking into it. He also said they've looked at all the options, and the only solution is to move Cathy's body.
Ester Cavil has hired a lawyer, and is filing a suit
