An elegant, old-school Big Island resort. – The Scene
If you can afford a few days of paradise, there is nothing like a stay at this resort. It is in a class by itself, located on the site of an old Hawaiian village that escaped damage during a volcanic eruption in the late 18th century. Take a wander and you'll find tropical gardens, a lagoon, exotic birds and cultural artifacts.
The property contains 125 thatched-roofed Polynesian hales, or bungalows. Each features a private lanai, dressing area and hammock or two. They do not have phones, radios, TVs or air-conditioning. Nor do they have keys. The resort is isolated from the rest of the world by a lava field, and the guard at the gatehouse allows only guests and staff members to enter. Many of the employees are not only related to each other but have worked here since the place opened in 1965. Once you've checked in there's no reason to leave, especially since meals are part of the deal. The two dining rooms, Hale Moana and Hale Samoa, feature transcontinental fare.
