Very, very... (at infinity) Pricey, but Great Food – The final bill will be a shock, but if you get a table nearest the ocean, the view and the food will make the bill more palatable. It is near the airport (no other reason to be in that area unless you're driving the "Road to Hana"), so this was a great way to spend our last evening before our red-eye flight back to the States.
Our Best Meal in Hawaii – We had dinner here on our honeymoon. It was the BEST meal we had in our 2 weeks in Hawaii. Yes, it is expensive (our bill was $160 without tip for two people -- drinks, appetizers, entrees, dessert, coffee). The service was outstanding, the food was incredible, and we had the best coffee of our lives. I am not one to give undeserved praise, but I still dream about Mama's House. You definitely need reservations, and expect traffic from the airport through Paia to be slow.
Overpriced and Poor Value – Mama's prices, even for lunch, are ridiculous! Lunches average $33 and a glass of wine is more that $14. The food is at best average and are not worth the prices that they are charging. Dinner prices are beyond comprehension. I strongly recommend that discriminating dinners eat at other restaurants in Paia that offer much better value and much better food. Even with reservations we waited a 1/2 hour and then were seated in an overflow area.
Add insult to injury – Complementary valet parking subsidized by exorbiant entree (and appetizer) prices. Warm welcome after you clear valet parking. Long lines 45 minute waits. Local traffic is bad. Not the same as the old Mama's from 2002.
Overpriced for Local Fare – Nice location, food is fairly good but is totally overpriced. You can go to almost another place that serves fish and find the same quality at a much lower price. Visited and raved about by mostly visitors who find nothing wrong with paying such high prices for average food. Crowded and uncomfortable..
The Best Fish House! – Food - atmosphere - service --- what else could you want??? The fish here were swimming the previous night - it doesn't get any fresher! The preparations are marvelous. Unless you are in the islands, you can't get this meal. You overlook th4e beach, and watch a gorgeous sunset. I alsways plan this as my last meal before leaving the island (the airport is 15 minutes away and no traffic on the way). This is the best way to end your visit to this marvelous island!!
If you're going to splurge, do it at Mama's! – Service and romantic beach setting were ideal. Food was fresh and presentation was very nice. Dinner was pricey though - $150 for a party of two. But well worth it.
Fantastic – I recently visited Maui and stayed at the Hyatt Resort in Ka'anapali on the western side of the island. We drove 2 hours round-trip to have dinner at Mama's and it was well worth it. I am not a seafood fan, at least not here on the mainland, but I was at Mama's. From seared ahi for appetizer to the mahi-mahi for dinner and some Ulapalakua rasberry desset wine for dessert it was fantastic. I will definetly go back to Maui and Mama's is on my list of places to visit. The employees are very knowledgeable with regards to the food and are very friendly. Make reservations inadvance because we made ours a month ahead of time and still couldn't get a Friday or Saturday night, although a Sunday night worked for us. Enjoy the seafood and the beautiful northshore scenery!
A Gip – I went to Maui on my honeymoon and took my wife to Mama's Fish House. My experience can be summed up by this: the price of food there vastly exceeds the quality. If your looking for a tasty meal - this is not the place. Dinner and drinks costed us $120 USD and was mediocre at best.
Cold fish – I began visiting Mamas in the early 80's, when Mamas was simply a house on the beach, and have returned every year since. My last visit, a year ago, our food was cold, and when I told our waiter, he replied, hm. No offer to fix the problem. And at the prices we paid, we were very disappointed. I will think twice about returning for a meal. The mai tais are terrific though.
