My visit to Bluebird Diner – Having lived in NC for 22 years and with my wife and I empty nesters, we are finally getting around this great state of NC to see it's sights. Today we visited Mt. Airy for our first time. We arrived in Mt. Airy at around 12 noon and decided that we would shop first, look at the sights, then eat lunch once the lunchtime crowd abated. So around 1:45 we were going to go to Barney's Cafe but it didn't appear that they accepted credit cards so we strolled over to the Blue Bird Diner. Big mistake! After a 10 minute wait, the waitress who kept apologizing finally made her way over and took our order. Wife ordered a grilled chicken club sandwich and I ordered a grilled chicken and ham sandwich basket. More on this later. Mind you the place was not crowded at this time, and yet at 2:25 we still hadn't received our order. We also noticed that folks seated in the booth behind us, who walked in right before us, also hadn't received their order. My wife then got up to find out if we were going to get served soon or we were going to walk out. She noticed that they were finally cooking our sandwiches. 10 minutes later we were served. As I told my wife it better be the best darn sandwich I ever ate because it took so long. Well it was not good at all. The chicken was tough and greasy in both sandwiches. Worst dining experience we have had in many a year! The wait staff was not friendly at all and they didn't know prices when it came to paying the check at the register. Pass this place up when in Mt. Airy!! Overall, a terrible experience and we are hoping that is not the case at other Mt. Airy eating establishments. It takes me a lot to get fired up to write a review, in fact this is my first, but this was such an awful experience I just wanted to voice my opinion so the owners may correct some problems.
was hoping for a great experience – we stopped on our way home to visit Snappys...it was closed. We strolled up to the Blue Bird Diner..... Was super excited. Ordered the pork chop sandwich basket as did my co worker.. with fries....... Very little fries and the pork chop sandwich was nothing but greese...... From the time we walked in to the time we left was an hour and 10 mintues.. We even waited 5 mintues to pay..... Not recommended at all. Very disappointed all around and i am not hard to please
Mayberry?? – We stopped in Mt. Airy last Saturday and took a stroll through town. Long line at the Snappy Lunch so we walked down to the Bluebird. We are glad we did. Excellent cheeseburgers and great fries. The service was quick and friendly and the price reasonable. Had a hot fudge sundae for dessert and the ice cream was super good. The place was crowded but we didn't have to wait and our waitress was very nice. Skip the tourist trap at the other end of the street and try the Bluebird!! You'll be glad you did.
Best Food in Mayberry – I have eaten there many times and WILL go back as often as I can. They have the most awesome onion rings ever! Trust me on this one! And they even handsqueeze each glass of lemonade. You might have to wait a bit ( as they are a small family owned place) but the wait is WORTH IT!
Most disappointing experience – I had a very disappointing experience at the Blue Bird Diner in Mt. Airy, NC on Sunday. When we entered the diner, asking to sit at the counter, the server was unpleasant about the request. She finally said OK but ignored us the entire time we were there. No one would serve us, we couldn't even get a glass of water. We finally left! That was definitely the most unpleasant experience I have ever had and you can get that I will not be a repeat visitor.
LOVE THIS PLACE – If you have time to enjoy a slower paced meal, dine at the Bluebird Diner. It was a great experience. The menu boasts that their onion rings are a "local favorite" and we could see why. They were delicious! The chicken strips were also just as good. The grilled chicken sandwich had good seasoning and tasted great. They have a variety of ice cream choices and some pie desserts. The peanut butter pie was one of the best we've ever tried. The service was also very good and everyone was so friendly. Our server didn't write down our order and got it all exactly right! It was such a great "small town" experience, just as Mayberry should be. We absolutely loved it. it was our first time but definitely won't be our last. I absolutely recommend. A+++
