A Shell of Its Former Self – This Macy?s location is long passed its glory days. It started out as a May Company when there was a Laurel Plaza (mall). It turned into a Robinsons-May after the rest of the mall was torn down. Now it?s been a Macy?s since Robinsons-May ceased to exist. I?ve been there a handful of times in past couple of years and each time the experience is more odd.

First, it?s weird to have such a big store by itself. So the plus side of that is you?re not fighting for a parking space. And you can park near any entrance. A second plus is that the employee-to-customer ratio is probably 5-to-1. I consider that a plus and a minus because the store has an odd, deathly silence to it. You can hear individual conversations because there?s no white noise caused by the shuffling of feet or the ?ding? of a register.

This location was built for it?s grand days. The ceilings are uncharacteristically high and that also adds to the odd atmosphere. I really don?t understand why this store still exists. It seems hard to believe that it?s profitable. I wandered around for at least ? an hour and didn?t see anything that screamed ?buy me?. I wasn?t accosted by a single sales person (though I cleverly avoided going near the cosmetics/perfume department) and it was a little like being in a store after closing. I left feeling a little disturbed by the experience.
