Ok, I'm only rating the portion of Skin Kitchen that I've experienced, and that experience was tonight. I was given a gift card for Skin Kitchen, and I called to talk to someone about potential scheduling so I could draw up some sort of design. The guy I reached on the phone was very rude on at least 3 different occasions in just the 5 minutes I was on the phone with him. He made it clear by not only verbal confirmation, but also just by the tone of his voice that I was not his priority at that time. I don't have any idea how good or bad the tattoo artists are that work there, I'm sure I'll have to find out at some point in the future because I am now stuck getting a tattoo there with this gift card. The customer service portion of ANY business is a huge first impression for a customer, and often it's the make or break for any customer. When someone has a bad apple, or just a rude employee manning the phones, it can be very costly.
I got my first tattoo ever at Skin Kitchen thirteen years ago. I now have over 100 hours of work and I have never gone anywhere else. 99% of my work has been done by Jack, but over the years I've come to know all of the artists there very well.
People consistently stop me to ask where I got my work done. On multiple occasions people have told me how they hate tattoos and think they're trashy or unprofessional, but the work I have is extremely impressive and they "never see tattoos like this"!
If you're looking to get work done, I absolutely recommend without any hesitation. Whether it's a highly detailed piece with intricate line work, old school traditional work, portraits, flash, etc., etc., they have you covered - they even have great piercers on staff.
*PLEASE* look at any artist's portfolio before getting tattooed anywhere. You should be able to see many pictures of their work, as opposed to just a few, so that you can see that they are consistently turning out great tattoos. Additionally, *please* remember that you will have this for the rest of your life! Spend the money to get it done right the first time! There's nothing wrong with always looking for a deal, but getting tattooed is not one of the situations in which to do that. You don't want to be the person that is always laughed at while people point to your train wreck of a cheap tattoo. You also don't want to wind up on a website like Ugliest Tattoos.
Now head into Skin Kitchen and setup and appointment! Amazing artists and piercers in a very large and very clean shop. You absolutely cannot go wrong.
Absolutely the best tattoo shop in Des Moines – Michelle Hall is a gifted tattoo artist....truly excellent work. She has given me a tattoo (my first in color) and it is a piece of art. She has also tattooed my friend and he is absolutely thrilled with how it turned out. Michelle is easy to work with and very personable.. the shop is very clean and the staff are friendly. Really great place to get the best tattoo in Des Moines.
Excellent Shop! Matt is Great Artist! – Matt was an excellent artist. He drew the tattoo on me for a custom work! Took his time and did a great job! He was courteous to me and my friends who came in. Gave me a great price! All I can say is that I will definately recommend this place to all my friends!
Awesome spot...Jack is a terrific artist – Jack did a wonderful job covering up a tattoo on my thigh with mural of flowers, he also did a fantatic job with the lilies on my arm. I couldn't see my self going anywhere else. I strongly recommend him and his shop to anyone.
Great place!!! I love skin kitchen. I have had two tattoos done here and i have walked out happy with both. My first was a small one of course. My second was a big one on my right shoulder. They was clean and professional with both of them. It is a very clean facility and the people working there are nice and happy to see you. My tattoos was done by two different people and they both turned out awesome. The second one I took the suggestions that was given to me by the tattooist and I'm glad i did. After all they are the ones who know what will look good. I highly recommend skin kitchen.
Rubber Stamp tattoos – Shop is one of the cleanest I have ever seen; I will give them that. But there is VERY LITTLE custom work happening in this shop and "rubber stamp" tattoos are the order of the day. Took my partner in to have some colored clouds added to an existing custom piece. We even showed them a photograph of the style and colors we were looking for. The artist didn't let me see it until he was done and it was NOTHING like our request (wanted blues and purples got orange, yellow and black). I would NEVER let anyone I know get tattooed here on purpose.
