The place is small but the food is powerful! The service could be alot better: There was only 2 occupied tables besides us and the server was in slow motion... We sat in the back, not a good idea! When someone would use the restroom the door would stay open and it felt as though we were eating in the bathroom. Eeew!
Sake was hot and went down smooth! The rolls were very creative and we will go back for that! The portions are very generous!
There was a "Killer Nat" trying to punk us for our sushi. The thing was so big it looked as though it was eating good @ Kobe Sushi for a while.
If you happen to be at San Bruno or near SFO, Kobe Sake is my recommended spot..
I have seen a lot of restaurants coming and going over the years in the San Bruno neighborhood, with many Asian restaurants changing hands or simply disappeared. Kobe Sake has been at the current location for over 8 years and still proudly standing 7 nights a week with 5 business days lunches, they must be doing something right.
The general atmosphere is warm and friendly at the sushi bar, making this restaurant one of my "visit once every week" dining experience. The service is excellent, but the service could become slow as the restaurant gets jam packed (usually late Friday and Saturday, so get there early).
As for the sushi, this is one of the very few honest restaurants that you could ask "What is good today" without getting any outlet items, and "SO GOOD!" is exactly how I would describe the quality of their sushi.
If you are by chance visiting this restaurant during the weekdays, you can really get to know the people in this restaurant well, and personally as a food lover, I prefer just that. I know there is this one guy always getting take-out order around the same time (6 PM) nearly everyday when I dine at Kobe Sake, such a "commitment" speak louder than words.
I would rate Kobe Sake 4 stars but not a 5, as there is room for improvement, but knowing how difficult it is for the industry to survive day by day, I simply could not ask for more as a customer. Here is a surprising fact: Kobe Sake has returning international customers from Europe. Domestic cliental spread out all over from Marin County to Los Angeles. If you happen to be at San Bruno or near SFO, this is my recommended spot.
EASILY THE BEST SUSHI IN TOWN!!!. THIS PLACE IS A HIDDEN GEM! without a doubt my favorite spot to have amazing sushi and chill. atmosphere is great and the chefs are masters. the fish is always excellent. the rolls are completely amazing! the "volcano", the "49"... these are the best rolls i have ever had. i am writing this review because I see some bad reviews, and I think these people must be crazy! The portions are huge. the prices are great compared to any excellent sushi restaurant. I work at one of the most popular sushi restaurants in San Francisco, and I go to this place every week. if you haven't been, you're missing out!
Great atmosphere but service can get really SLOW at times.
I've been going to this place for years. As a matter of fact I remember when it was called Sakeya's but I'm not sure if the owners were the same.
Food for the most part is very very good. Some people I know might get a little picky on the sushi flavor/authenticity but this is the bay area so variety is what makes it so great!
To be honest the service can either be very friendly or downright horrible. The best service you will ever get would be in the day time right before a lunch crowd where you can sit and chat with either Minh or Nine (the owner & his brother/chefs) while they make you a "Dynamite." The worst (and this has happened to me) would be on a super crowded busy night where you are in the corner and the servers keep passing you up because they forgot you were there/can't see you. I still highly recommend it tho. If it's your first time and you are the "impatient I better get supreme quality service" type then go when it's a slow time (like the lunch). If you don't mind waitng with friends while downing Sake Bombs and other sake drinks then go on Friday or Saturday night.
Recently they've added DJ's to there atmosphere and the Friday night guy plays old skool hip-hop classics that make me remember being at my high school and has the crowd singing it's lyrics. Good because I hear enough of that "bay hyphy" stuff on the radio and regular clubs.
So lunch time/normal weekday. Great restaurant. Weekends, treat it as a bar/lounge that serves sushi! =)
Nothing Japanese about the sushi. Take it from a nisei who grew up summering in Japan. I had it once, and the sushi was mostly terrible. The hamachi wasn't fresh, the ebi was tough and overcooked, and we had some kind of a roll that was ugly, uneven, and drenched in a sickly sweet sauce that I don't recognize as remotely Japanese. Some of our nigiri came without wasabi. Only the high-volume fish - the maguro and sake - were good and fresh. What a waste of money.

GREAT FOOD AN GREAT CROWED!!!!. I am not a huge fan of sushi but i love Kobe Sake. I started going there many years ago when i found out my boss at the time new the owner and that they were very close friends. The first time i had gone was on a friday night it was totally packed an yes the service was a little slow but what do u expect, i knew a bunch of people there and i had such a great time. I have been going ever since. If you love Sushi but hate crowds i suggest you go on a week day, but if u love to take Sake Bombs an party with a bunch of cool people i say check out Kobe on a friday or Saturday... You wont be dissapointed.
SLOW service but good sushi. Sushi is very good. Plan on dinner taking 2-3 hours as the service is extremely slow. I suggest calling in and ordering to go. Plan on picking up to go orders at least 30 mintues later than they tell you and plan to still wait. Prices are a bit high.
Food, especially the sushi is SO GOOD! Service in dining area ::thumbdown.
Haha this is funny. I know people that work there and have other friends that go there on a frequent basis. I personally loved the food (chicken teriyaki, sashimi, and shrimp tempura). I also had a 49er roll! It was very good! When I was there they only had one waitress on the floor. She was a bit out of it and didnt remember our order! I saw her writing it down! WTF? Any way, on this day, I wasn't in a hurry and was enjoying time with friends and drinking a little sake!....so good! I agree with another reviewer that the service can be bad, but I whole heartedly disagree about the food not being good. The owner only uses fresh ingredients, so it is understandable that they run out of some items. Anyway, try the Wasabi root, or whatever its called. My friend called it fresh wasabi, so good.
I would recommend going there. I definitely will go back!
The worst dining experience I've ever had!. I can not even begin to describe how bad the service was. On top of that, the food wasn't even good. All those good review must have been from how things were in the past. What a shame.
