disappointment. Went here on Chinese New Year and I must say it was a bit of a disappointment. Seemed they weren't too interested in serving the white folks. We had to wait, even though a couple who came in after us didn't have reservatiopns either. They were able to go first.

Stomping the fish to death with dirty shoes. Two of us went for dinner on the new year's day, 2009. We sat at the table near the bottom of the stairway and the kitchen entrance. I sat facing the kitchen, so I saw the cook getting a fish out of the tank. But the fish jumped out to the floor. The cook stomped the fish to death with his dirty shoes (Chinese kitchen floors are always dirty.) I told the man who looked like a manager about it. He just said "sorry. " He didn't even go inside to the tell cook. Such behavior in some nicer restaurants can cause the cook being fired. Here the manager didn't even tell the cook that his conduct was not acceptable. If they treat a fish there like this, imagine how they treat your food.

Very rude Management!. The food was good, and the price was ok. Anyhow, I would not recommend this restaurant if you are expecting good, quality service. The waiters and waitresses were slow. You have to ask for every little thing (hot saucem soy sauce, salt and pepper, water...) Usually, when you go to a chinese restaurant for din sum, all the condiments are ready at the table, as for this restaurant, not only do you have to ask for every little bit of condiment, you also have to wait for the waiter to give it to you piece by piece. By the time I got my salt and pepper, by congee was already cold. And by the time I got my hot sauce, most of my dim sum were cold. The manager, PETER, even had the ridiculous mindset to think he can ask me for 15% gratuity as I was walking out the door! I asked him if that was really neccessary even if I didn't feel the service was that good, he then rudely marched to the counter and grabbed a flyer of a specail menu that states on the very bottom in very small prints, " 15% gratuity is recommended for a party of 10 or more". However, I was there with only one other friend, which makes the 2 of us with bad, rude service. I felt like I was being panhandles for money, just like how homeless people would approach me in the streets for some change, but it seemed unneccessary for a known restaurant. After I said the service wasn't too good to deserve 15%, he told me how the restaurant was rated in the top 100 of best restaurants. UH...Mr. Peter, the ignorant manager might have forgoten, but the review and rating was for the year 2004! Try to get the same rating for this year. Other than poor management, everything was toleratable, but I will not ever go there again, and I don't recommend it to those who dislike being panhandled.

Great weekday deal!. The $1.99/dish weekday special is a favorite - I'd list the options but don't want to risk having to argue with you for a table! (Try the black bean oysters though!) Let's just say for 3 folks, total bill came to $40 (before tax/tip), with enough food left over for at least another single meal. Have been hunting for authentic dim sum options in SF, especially as a native and in light of several recent dim sum restaurant closures, and can say that South Sea Restaurant definitely didn't disappoint in the Sunset area.

Great food/service, but it's not dirt cheap. This place is great. It works for both small and large parties. The service is outstanding and the food is amazing. The prices are reasonable and you get your money's worth, but it's just not dirt cheap like your average SF Chinese restaurant.

Still, I keep coming back to this place and would highly recommend it to others. On the flip side, Parking can be a pain.

My most favourite chinese resturant.. All dim sum are delicious. Especially the sharkfins dumpling in high quality soup.

Don't Forget The Dim Sum. The food at this place is the best Chinese in the city. AND, the have the most amazing dim sum on the planet. The place is packed on Sundays so get in line and get your number. You will not be disappointed. Service is friendly and fast. The room is beautifully appointed. The restrooms are clean. They also remember you when you returnQ

Best Chinese food (and I am Chinese!). I've been to them all - Ton Kiang, Koi Palace, Harbor Village, HK Flower Lounge - this place is the nicest looking (rosewood furniture), best food (seafood, great fish, great clams, fresh veg, salt/pepper ribs), and not expensive (like harbor village). Must try!
