Discover reasonably priced classic French cooking at this winning little Polk Gulch hideaway. – The Scene
Curbside Bistro is a sweet boite hidden underground at San Francisco's historical Alliance Francaise; the uncontrived Euro-style of the bemirrored little room often has the added charm of neighbors speaking French. The open kitchen, tiny bar and student-friendly prices make you feel like a co-conspirator in the whole affair.
The genuine feeling extends to the Julia Child-style menu of French favorites as well as to the portions, which are less nouveau and more in the filling mode. Share an enormous, gorgeous salad with walnuts, macerated pear, tiny bits of red onion and pungent blue cheese. Escargot with puff pastry bathed in a mushroomy cream sauce is also rich and decadent enough for two (and mild enough to win over any snail-phobics). Entrees are fine versions of classics: a duck breast with a sweetish lavender sauce, a generous and tender coq au vin, a serviceable New York steak draped with peppercorn sauce.
Great First Experience – I'm new to the area and Curbside Bistro was recommended by a co-worker. We went at 7:30 on a Wednesday night and had the whole place to ourselves. Bottle of wine, rabbit pate appetizer, hangar steak and duck breast entrees cam to $65. Quality was worth it and the service was great. I'll be going here again.
