theatre of the absurd – This place is now El Porton Restaurant. The food is good but the prices a bit high. Beware when ordering beer with your delivery, they charged me like 4 dollars for a Corona Light. If you want Corona with your meal and you're ordering in, buy the beer separately at one of the local bodegas or the supermarket, 4 dollars is just ridiculous. They make good shrimp, steak, breakfast eggs "a la mexicana," but the level of spiciness is kind of unpredictable. A few times the jalepenios were so strong I felt I was going to need to be hospitalized. Someone must have complained because the next time I ordered it was terribly bland, so they're a bit inconsistent when it comes to dialing in the right frequency of spiciness for their dishes. If you call and you know Spanish, you're better off using that language when ordering. It can be a bit difficult to communicate with the staff. They're really nice but sometimes it was so difficult to communicate that you start to feel that you're in some absurdist play by Beckett. Dining in the restaurant is quite pleasant -- who doesn't like to chat in a cozy atmosphere, with some good booze, chips and salsa, and a jukebox playing Mexican standards.
Not the best or cheapest mexican food you will find – This place is not bad, it's just not the best. The prices are on the high side for Mexican food in this neighborhood. I suggest Spanish Harlem.
Great Customer Service – Good food, reasonable prices, and best of all, the kind staff stored two boxes of food from my refrigerator when the power went out in my apartment for 24 hours (I live next door). They were very gracious about it and will definitely have my return business. ++++
