I can't describe how frustrated and disappointed I have been with my experience at Sports Medicine at Chelsea. I not only feel like I wasted a lot of time and money getting very bad treatment but I also think the staff is more interested in making money vs actually helping a patient get better. I am now in another physical therapy office getting excellent service and treatment. I wish I hadn't ever stepped foot in Sports Medicine at Chelsea. Avoid this place!!! The therapist *(Tom) sits and types notes on his computer every session for nearly half the allotted time. I don't even think he knew my name or cared whether or not I was improving each visit. While he could have more actively tried new exercises and adjustments, he treated each visit like it was the first time. Complete waste of time and money. They will overbill the insurance company and send you a huge bill. Do yourself a favor... check around, as you will find a much better physical therapy place in the city.
Terrible staff. Dr Stark has numerous malpractice lawsuits pending against him. This place is a joke go here if you want to get worse.
Every visit is your first visit. – I would avoid this place. I am never going back. Dr. Stark is not exactly charming, but it was the physical therapy... I went three times, and every time it was like the first appointment: he had no idea what my problem was, he had no idea where the pain was, he told me the exact same exercises to do, he had me go through the exact same motions... and all with this "Aha! NOW I've found the problem!" tone. I honestly don't know how they do it with a straight face. Finally, it was a matter of asking myself if I wanted to just keep throwing away time and money. I would go to anyone else.
What a terrible place! – This is just an awful place:
-Overbilled my insurance - billed for something they didnt do - I had to spend HOURS on the phone with my insurance sorting this out
-Didnt return my calls when I inquired about the services they billed for
-Waited 8 months after my last session before the bill finally came - and I had to deal with my insurance all over again
-When the bill came, there was no address of where to send payment
-The physical therapist - Patrick - didn't know my name after 6 visits (went to physical therapy 2x/week)
-Dr. Stark was just unprofessional!
AVOID or risk further injury – This visit to Clifford Stark was such a waste of time and so disappointing. I'll start with the worst first. I have had an injury to the back of my leg for 2 months. At no point was there any bruising or tenderness to the touch. Dr. Stark repeatedly pressed on it with such force, even after I pulled away- that a couple of hours later it was bruised, swollen, and tender to the touch. Like I said it was never like that before and I did nothing in the two hours following the appointment. His rough handling of my injury made it worse! What happened to "first do no harm"? Aren't they teaching that in med school anymore? I am not the type to play the victim but I feel abused and violated. And now I'll have to wonder if going to the doctor is going to make it take longer to heal.
On top of that, after all that pressing and probing he was not able to give me a diagnosis.
This last point seems insignificant in comparison, but I was also surprised that he kept me waiting before the appointment while having a loud and obviously-not-urgent conversation with a co-worker. I was thinking, wow he must know I can hear this! Am waiting for an inattentive cashier at Duane Reade or this a Doctor? But I thought, hey if he knows his stuff I don't care if he's off putting.
I retrospect that was the first clue that this guy is not here for me but for him self.
The only redeeming thing is that he did spend a lot time listening and talking. But the fact that he caused further injury and wasn't even able to diagnosis the problem sort of makes that a moot point.
The Best Comprehensive Sports Medicine and Integrative Practice Anywhere!!! – I have been to a ton of doctors over the years for my lower back pain. Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, other Sports Medicine Doctors, and no one has ever come even close to diagnosing my problem and treating it. I had been to a sports medicine practice on the east side around 40th street and it was awful! The doctor was clearly out solely for my money. Dr. Stark, however, is an amazing doctor who truly cares about his patients. He will spend an hour with you, to make sure he knows exactly what is going on and bothering you. His exam is so thorough and he is extremely intelligent. So many times I wanted to throw in the towel and go for surgery, but after he explained what is going on in my back, I started working with his physical therapists, who are also highly trained and much more thorough than ones I've been to in the past. They actually did a lot of exercises and strengthening as opposed to just putting on some ice and stim. I've also started with prolotherapy injections for my back. What I really liked about Dr. Stark was that he did not push the injections, but rather took a more conservative approach at first. I was very hesitant to get injections in my back, but as soon as he began, I knew he knew exactly what he was doing and he put my mind at ease.
His office is really nice and his staff most helpful. Plus, in addition to Dr. Stark, there is another doctor, Dr. Degenhardt, who specializes in travel and integrative medicine. I travel a lot, and it's great to know there is a doctor who can tell me exactly what I need for when I'm in other countries. I've also spoken with him about the possibility of acupuncture for my back, since he does that as well.
Overall, I love Sports Medicine at Chelsea because I can go to one office for practically all of my needs. I've gone there when I'm sick as well because they are both primary doctors in addition to their specialties. I can't say enough good things about the whole practice!!
Finally!! – OMG... I been to about 100 Dr's office in my lifetime.. but none like this. First when I got there I didnt have to fill out the 550 pages of intake forms.. they have this touch screen pad that was able to tap tap and thats it. My appointment was at 10am and I was in the Dr's chair at 9:58 and out by 10:25. I have never ever seen something like this. The best part was that I had called them at 9am hoping to get an appointment for the end of the week of beginning of the next week and they girl said..." I will give you an appointment for Friday, but if you can get out of work for a little bit, I'll have you see him before his first patient today!" are you serious... and that's what happened. After talking to his staff and mentioning a future trip to Brazil, I found out that they also have a Dr. there that specializes in Travel Medicine. Nevertheless, 2 weeks later I was back there to get Yellow Fever and Hep B vaccines without a problem. They have appointments as late at 730pm and SATURDAYS... oh and by the way, they have another Dr. who does women's health (pap smears) which is great for someone like me who doesnt have kids and who is not planning on it anytime soon, she doesnt treat Obsetrics which means that its only GYN things... the office is never full and they are always available. It makes me feel so much better to know that if I need to see my Dr fast, I can.
