My boyfriend and I went to La Cabaña Argentina during lunch time. The first thing that caught my eye as I walked in (silly enough) was a plate with olive oil, pepper and olives to dip your bread in,that was being placed on everyone's table. I was excited because you usually get just butter. When our waiter, I believe it was the Colombian waiter( tall, thin framed, dark features) came over to take our order he dropped off a plate with butter and warm bread. At first I thought maybe the olive oil "dip plate" was an appetizer but then I also noticed that the other waiter just kept putting down the olive oil "dip plate" on everyone's table. At this point, I became alarmed because I felt that we were being discriminated against in a very subtle way. So I immediately asked the waiter if I could have olive oil, he then looked at me gave me a cynical smile and said " YES I CAN GET YOU OLIVE OIL"
He then came back with a bottle of olive oil and smiled. I then said to him “oh is the olive oil dip plate that everyone has on their table an appetizer?” “I want that dip plate that everyone has..not a bottle of olive oil”
W: “I don’t think you want to know why everyone has that dip and you don’t”
Me: “I want to know Sir, please tell”
W: “Your not going to like what I’m about to tell you so let’s just leave it like that”
Me: Sir, tell me
W: “ those are special clients who come all the time, they own businesses and we treat them very well”
At this point I was furious- I did not want to ruin my meal any further over a lousy dip but it is just the principle behind the waiter’s intentions. If he thinks that this is a way of retaining customers then he is WRONG. He needs to be fair and not make NEW customers feel discriminated against just because my boyfriend and I are not some big shots from Jackson Heights. Little does he know we love food and we constantly dine-out (potential recurring customers). I have been to many upscale restaurants in Manhattan and I have never been put into a category so directly in my life.
After we finished our meal- I wrote a long explanation as to why I was not tipping the waiter (gave him a piece of my mind).
Service is very important to me and being that the food was just decent, I will never go back.
Great Steaks – After visiting Argentina, I would say that La Cabaña Argentina offers the best steaks in the United States. Their steaks have the most flavor, cooked to perfection and the price is good for the amount of food. I moved out of the city five years ago, and came back recently, scared that this restaurant wouldn’t be the same. I was happy to see that it is still one of the best steak houses in the city, and perhaps the country. This is the place to eat steaks in New York. Eating here is worth the trip from Manhattan, and if you're going to the Mets stadium is just a subway stop away.
Best Steak dinner – My neighbors told me how great the Cabana Steak and Pizza was and it lived up to my great expectations. I've taken many of my guests and family and they left so happier for the experience. Service is very nice, fast served to the table is bread, hot and delicious and it's all a great lead up to the main course. Last visit had the crab salad!! to start. Will order it again as it was true crab meat and plenty to share for two. go hungry, leave happy!!
i adore this place – i've always been helped by the same waiter, who is very friendly and gives you all the privacy you could ask for... best lunch deal in the city... best pizza in the whole world: la cabana (house) pizza, with an absurd amount of cheese and skirt steak and prosciutto and chorizo. MMM, i dream about this pizza... awesome skirt steak... it takes me a minimum of 30 minutes by subway and 15 minutes walking to get to (and from) this place, but it's more than worth it. i love the vibe in this place. lots of families. lots of people just here to eat. this place is my secret, shh.
