Great place for a business lunch/dinner/meeting – I've been going to Cool River for a few years now and have never been disappointed. This is actually my favorite place to bring my boss (a discerning wine and food critic) when he comes to town.
The Capper with the gorgonzola cream sauce is hands down #1 if you are in the mood for a very flavorful filet. Be sure to try something from their extensive wine list to complement your meal.
I haven't spent much time in their bar/lounge area, however it appears to be a nice gathering place for an afterwork cocktail.
Cigar bar...Ha! – Been going to Cool River for years for drinks and munchies. The ambiance is great: big leather chairs, fireplace, and the restaurant looks cool too. Always happy to sit in the cigar bar, we were glad that it would still be a place for us to hang out after the smoking ban. To our surprise, I was told that I could not smoke a cigarette inside the premises, even though my husband was smoking a cigar right next to me. I was told to go outside, in the snow, to smoke. While I understand that limits must be set, but when in the company of a cigar smoker, exceptions should be made. We found other places allow it, and will not return to Cool River.
One of the Best Steaks in Denver plus good Value – Since I work in the Tech Center, I often have the pleasure to enjoy a nice, juicy steak at Cool River. The service I have received has always been excellent, the steak actually comes with a choice of side and salad (included in the price!) which is a refreshing change from always having to buy things ala carte. I prefer to stick with the basics at Cool River. The New York Strip and Filet Mignon are always right on the mark, and the wine list to compliment the meal is extensive and full of great selections for all budgets. The bar is a little dated, and I actually prefer to go here for dinner not so much to hang out in the bar which can be a little cheesey and full of tragically over fashioned people. But don't let that deter you from a great meal in the dining room. The Devil's Advocate (BBQ Shrimp wrapped in bacon) are a perfect way to start your meal. For the money, you can't find a better steak in Denver. As far as parking goes, try going around to the back of the building.. don't use the front lot. Always works for me. And they do have complimentary valet so it's really not a big problem.
parking is horrible – I've been here for happy hour on Friday night. Prices were good but rather inconsistent from person to person for the same exact drink. e.g., jack and diet ranged in price from $3.75 to $4.25 to $4.50 depending on the bartender/waitress. This is definitely a yuppie bar and a good place to go if you're trying to meet nice professional people after work. The service from the wait staff is not the greatest. I've tried two appetizers--the calamari was rather blah but the nachos were fantastic. Each nacho was individually "loaded" which was a great change of pace from the usual bar nachos where all the good stuff is on the top layer and the bottom layer gets nothing. A huge downside to this place is lack of parking. Good luck getting a spot if you arrive to the plaza after 5:30 on Friday night.
Hitting on all cylinders – Cool River is trendy, good looking crowd. You can actually meet here for a first date cocktail and decide to dine, cozy up together to shoot some pool, dance and let it hang loose, or just sit quietly at a booth or table and conversate.
The only part of this set up I find as a downside is that you must go all the way to the front door to check out balls for the pool tables located in the back....C'mon! It's crowded and that is a pain.
The martinis are good sized, not sure on the ounces, but at least it's a power drink for the money they set you back...
Great range of demographics...you can literally come as you are and have a good time, but it's more of a place to dress to impress...
Great Food/Atmosphere – Cool River Cafe is an excellent place to meet friends for drinks in its spacious bar or have an intimate dinner date by the fireplace in the dining room. The appetizer menu presents creative and tasty takes on traditional favorites; while the dinner menu offers a wide variety of surf and turf. Save room for the "Mile High" chocolate cake...a truly decadent dessert, and my personal favorite.
