Beware – I have eaten sushi religiously for a long time. I thought when I saw Kooma I had found a great whole in the wall place. But boy was I wrong!!
It was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had!!!!
We had no wait for our table on a Saturday at around 7 pm. However we didn't see our server for 10 minutes, when we finally ordered drinks. Putting in our food order took at least another 30.
The worst part of the experience...
My friend got his food somewhat promptly. We waited and waited for mine. However as his food was getting cold I told him to go ahead. He had completely finished his meal before my food came (about 30 minutes later)
I ordered the deluxe sushi dinner for $22. An outrageous price for what I received. 10 skimpy pieces of less than sushi grade fish. Everything was smaller and less fresh than I expected for the deluxe dinner. It was served on a plain white plate with absolutely no garnishes of any type. I have never been so embarassed in my life! I had been scammed.
Despite the horrors of my experience, the wait staff and manager did nothing to remedy the situation! Please beware. This is not a restaurant anyone should ever visit!
Editorial Review by Christy Buena – Sushi is featured at the intimate, cozy Japanese restaurant that also serves Korean dishes and hibachi grilled meat entrees.
Great sushi / Horrendous Service – The saddest thing about Kooma is that it's the best sushi in Columbus, but the service is so terrible that it makes even the biggest sushi addicts (like myself) never want to go there again. I've been a handful of times b/c I just can't resist the quality of the food, but every time I end up leaving angry and frustrated because of either having to wait a ridiculous amount of time for a table, being ignored alltogether, or having a server who is completely ignorant of the food they're serving or how to serve food in general. Until I hear that they've drastically changed their service quality, I'm taking my business to Haiku from now on. The sushi is very comparable and the service is dependable.
Sunday Morning Roll – All I have to say is in the title. If you go here, TRY THE SUNDAY MORNING ROLL! oh my gosh, it is the best thing, ive only been there twice but i could never go and not get that. it has crab and cream cheese and its deep fried which could sound kinda gross cause thats what i thought at first but its sooooooooooooooooo good!
think this is good?? – i don't know why anyone would think that this place serve good food...i tried the food and i definitely had waaaaay better food. I had to wait for 45 minutes for my seat, another 25 minutes for the food to come out, and i didn't even finish my food...it was just not what i expected...
this is supposed to pass for good sushi? – I eagerly tried Kooma after seeing it ranked as #2 in columbus, but was I ever disappointed. I visited on a Monday afternoon and even though there were only two other tables in the place the service was less than attentive. I've worked in the restaurant industry for ten years. Two servers + two tables and bad service= unacceptable. I've also had the experience of working in a japanese restaurant before and the sushi was not good. The tuna on top of my roll instead of being slices was a ground spicy tuna paste. Not a pleasing texture, it reminded me of wet cat food. I also ordered another roll that with lackluster menu descriptions to my surprise came deep fried in a bowl filled with a sauce. The sauce had a good flavor but a deep fried roll in sauce turns soggy in about 2 minutes. Inventive ideas in sushi can be a good thing but there is such a thing as poor execution to a good idea. Kooma seemed to me to be just that.
The WORST Service..WAITED 3 HRS FOR TAKE OUT!!! – I'd been to Kooma's about 3 other times, the 4th time, I called an order in and was told it may be about 45 mintues. As I was heading over there 50 min. later, I called to see if it was finished. I was told by their bartender '..it'll be ready in a few minutes' After I got their (15 min. after call) food wasn't done. I paid bartender..after that, I was ignored by the entire wait staff as I fumed for TWO MORE HOURS! Not one of them offered amends of any kind! I should've left, but I kept thinking the food may be ready to take..I will never go back there again. Great Sushi, Worst Service.
Disappointing – I was excited to try to place after hearing it was a personal favorite of a friend but I was definately disappointed. The menu looked great but it's too bad that the food didn't live up to it. The fish smelled and took my appetite away, which was unfortunate because my husband and I had ordered a few rolls. The miso soup was also a disappointment and you usually can't go wrong with that. Free of charge, you are treated to soy beans but I didn't take a liking to them (just in general). Interestingly, there were specialty rolls that I didn't know about until I was leaving and would have like to know about them when I was ordering. So overall, not worth it and expensive.
Perfect! – I almost want to keep this place a secret- It's that good! Excellent sushi, attentive waitstaff. Being from California I thought I would never find good sushi in Ohio- Until now!
The best place no one knows about! – You'll forget all about Otani when you come to Kooma. Working downtown, I often go there at least once a week for lunch. The wait staff, chefs and host/hostesses are friendly. The sushi/fish is always fresh and the service is prompt. You won't find better tuna ANYWHERE! Try the 2005 roll, and the spicy California! Their sushi and roll selection is diverse, so theres something for everyone.
