Lovely food and even lovelier people – In my book, the folks at Thaicoon & Sushi are now and have always been some of the nicest, most friendly, most accommodating, most gracious restaurant people I have ever encountered. Ever. Anywhere. My family has been going there since it opened. We especially like to go on Sundays and try some of the authentic Thai dishes. By the looks of the other diners, this is the real deal for Thai food. We are always treated like appreciated customers -- almost like family. Service is prompt and attentive without being overdone. Ask about what's not on the menu -- especially Sunday deserts -- and don't be shy to ask about things on the non-English Thai menu. Everyone there is happy to help you find your way through the list to things you know you love but don't recognize in the Thai language to things you never even knew to try before. The Pad Thai never disappoints. It's a bit different than the standard with its thinner noodles and delicate sweetness -- so delicious. I also love the Japanese dishes and find the sashimi to be as fresh and lovely as any I've had anywhere. Super Crunch -- yum! This place really deserves a shot.
Great food, very rude and unfriendly staff – I have visited this place at least twice every month over the past year. The food is great! But the consistently rude service is annoying. I tried talking to the manager (well, the person who they pointed out as manager) but it did not help. The only reason I keep going there is cos of the food. If you don't mind rude service, unsmily faces and all that goes with it, its definately a place to go.
This place is addictive – This place is a hidden gem. We eat here at least once a month and have never had a bad meal or bad experience with the staff. The combination Thai and Japanese menu is great, b/c you can have a little bit of everything.
Casual Thai spot off Briarcliff does better-than-average sushi in an unassuming strip mall. – In Short
A glowing orange neon sign boldly displays Thaicoon's location in a decades-old Kroger strip mall off Briarcliff Road. The interior feels like a mediocre suburban chain and menus are delivered with plastic inserts showing pictures of the sushi selection. With everything it has going against it, Thaicoon's kitchen simply forgot that's it's supposed to be bad. Service is sharp and to the point. The sushi is affordable, and while not up to MF's standard, is certainly in the same ballpark as the ever-popular Harry and Son's. Serving both Japanese and Thai foods is usually a bad sign, but Thaicoon's Pad Thai is just as good as the Japanese cucumber salad counterpart. On Sundays the restaurant goes old-school with a real-deal, non-Americanized menu, driving those of Thai decent to flock to this little spot. It's not much o look at, but it excels in what counts.
Fantastic & Authentic – I was amazed yesterday. My girlfriend is Thai and new to Atlanta--this is where her friends go, this is where she goes, and she took me while I was visiting. I'm a chef and try to recreate traditional recipes but they slapped me in the face with their food. The simplest special of yard-long beans with chiles and nam pla and I think some miniature boiled peanuts...blew my mind. Light, yet filling, and it's nice to have someone that speaks Thai to help you a litle bit. Go on Sundays--specials galore. Sea urchin roll. Tasted of the sea. Wonderful! Oh yeah---Tom Yum also. Support the good places regardless of strip mall locations!
Great lunch specials – I go here for lunch very often. They have the best sushi specials at unbelievable prices. Some come with a wonderful cucumber and citrus salad. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. There is never a wait. The service can be slow and without a smile. They're not rude, just not friendly. All in all, this is a great spot.
Great Value & Great Sushi! Love The Cucumber Salad! – Monday nights have become a ritual here. Every Mon. & Tues. is $1 Sushi at Dinner. And it's good, fresh quality fish. We always start with a couple of salads, at $1.95, the green salad with a full body Ginger Dressing. Probably the best Ginger Dressing in Atlanta. And get a second salad to share also- the Cucumber Salad, with oranges, tomatoes, crabmeat- it's real, and Rice Vinegar Dressing. Our favorite roll is the Sashimi. Fresh Salmon, Tuna, white fish, ta'mago, wrapped in seaweed and served with ponzu. Service is friendly, and the place has a great neighborhood vibe. And those prices!
Authentic Thai every Sunday. Great Thai food. – Sun is the best time to go since they have authentic thai dishes thru out the day (I think it ends around 5pm)
I would say the dishes on their special menu on sunday is the best thai you will get in town. Unlike Thai Star (worse service, and worse food).
Must try papaya salad and spicy thai pork. Yummy.
Amazing sushi, great value, and wonderful service – We have become regulars at Thaicoon and Sushi bar due to the amazing food, great value for it and friendly & quick service. Over a year ago, the service was aweful and we almost stopped going there even though we loved the food. That completely changed 1+ years ago as there is new management and new service there now. Both the sushi & thai are delicious and they are generous with their portions. The Kamakazi roll is completely addictive and the thick ginger dressing on the salad is a rarity in Atlanta. We are sushi-addicts and have been to sushi restaurants all over the city, like MF Sushi and Aqua Blue. Though the quality of fish is top notch there, the types of rolls don't even compare to Thaicoon & Sushi Bar (and the quality of fish is great there too). Most of all, we always have a wonderful experience when we go there!
Good Neighborhood Sushi Restaurant – I order from here all the time... They have a great variety of sushi rolls and it is pretty consistent. Definitely go on Monday nights... they have a dollar sushi special!! I recommend the "Rainbow Supreme" roll, which has eel, cream cheese, and cucumber topped with tuna, white fish, salmon, shrimp and avocado or the "Super Crunch" roll. There is a Japanese menu and there's also a Thai menu, so there are options for everyone. My friends love the pad thai... The steamed tofu or chicken and vegetables is also a good choice. And don't forget the ginger salad... it's excellent.
