DON"T EAT HERE!!!!!.
Perhaps the worst dining experience ever. The place is dirty and run down, just like it was a year ago when I enjoyed some of the best fish and chips in town.
This trip was exactly the opposite. Definitely the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.
DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!
Worst Dining Experience Ever. My husband and I took visiting family members here for "good seafood" and it was a big mistake. Poor service, disgusting environment, and mediocre food. The final straw was the karoke in upstairs bar got so unruly that the half-drunk owner yelled up to those patrons and continued to swear at them on the way out. Needless to say, we couldn't get out of that dump fast enough
Want to feel Welcome?.
When I moved to Portland, Oregon, a scant 3 months ago, I knew nobody. Where I'm from, everybody says hello to strangers, not so much here in Portland. This is not the case at The Crab Bowl. From the first time I ordered a pint at their bar, I was treated like a friend.
I haven't had much of the food. But the House made Salsa is practically a food group, as in that I think I may now require it to live! And it goes real great with the Bay Shrimp Quesadilla!
The evenings are lively, but never nasty, and the Karaoke folks are just plain FUN!
If you are in SW PDX, and feel like kicking back at a local place, having a pint and a bite to eat, I recommend The Crab Bowl. You'll be welcomed with a smile, and you may make a few new friends!
Gross - Do not go there.
Do not go here.
We had a gift certificate so I was willing to give the place a shot. However, the place was disgusting. There was trash all over. In fact, the owner was drying out his sneakers in front of the fire place, with the insoles out. They screwed up our order, which wasnt a big deal but just showed how much attention they paid to the only two customers in the place.
There was one other customer, for a few minutes, that was talking about her drug habit (and I am not talking about weed) with the bartender who was on the same page as hers.
This place is seriously disgusting, I am going to call the health inspector.
Its never a good sign when you see the cook eating a microwave meal in the dinning room... if they wont eat their own food, who will. GROSSSSSSSSSS
Crab Louie, Woooo-eeee!. For an appetizer, we started with the steamed clams. For about $6.oo, there was a good 12 freshly dug clams, seasoned with butter and garlic and a chef's secret ingredient. Devoured. My 10 year old had a thick chocolate milkshake made perfectly with some to share with his Mom. Then the clam chowder that comes with the meal arrived and my picky boys wolfed that down also. Delicious! Our Huge entrees arrived with ample fresh seafood piled on. Amazing. Really a great bargain, kid friendly(unlike the 21 and over dive on Sandy) and a Pop and son operation. It gets my highest recommendation and I can not wait to go there again.
A Book as Bad as its Cover.
The hostess was a small old scruffy dog that ran out of the kitchen to greet us with obnoxious barking.
We were quickly seated at a sticky table among a construction zone of remodeling tools and parts by a nice but grimy older gentleman (who ordered the dog to go upstairs).
We were soon introduced to a very nice but sweaty young man as our waiter, who appeared untidy, unprepared and unconfident, yet he swiftly took our order and brought us some yummy shrimp salad, steamer clams and bland fried calamari.
About 15 minutes later, a not so clean looking, sleeveless, long-haired, tattooed, biker-type man came through the front door and entered the kitchen. He may have been the chef that was called in since we were the only customers in the dining room and we just ordered a large amount of the food that was not currently out-of-stock.
Almost an hour later, the food arrived just as we were about to leave. Whew, that was close, because we almost missed out on some really greasy fried fish & chips that were really dry and bland, but the grilled fish was tasty. The oysters should have NOT have been allowed to be ordered or eaten, and should have been removed from their 'specialities' menu. We also did NOT find a single flea or hair in our soup.
Would I go there again?
No, unless it was free, in broad daylight and if my immunity system was in excellent condition. As much as I would NOT want to take someone with me again, it may be a safer idea.
The experience was astonishing like none other. Yuk!
Great Crab Louis and Seafood Platter!. My friend and I enjoyed a very fine meal at the Crab Bowl Restaurant last night. We had a thick and "meaty" seafood gumbo to begin with....It may have been a bit on the salty side. The fried calamari appetizer was delicious, perhaps the best I've ever had. My friend said his crab louis salad was the best he'd ever had, and I really enjoyed my seafood platter. I chose halibut, prawns and a crabcake as my three choices and they were terrific. The chips that came with the platter weren't at all crispy, though. The service was fine. The waiter seemed a little overwhelmed....He appeared to be the only one waiting tables, but he maintained a very friendly demeanor and was attentive to our needs. The bartender brought us a pitcher of beer from the bar upstairs, probably to help out the waiter some. Nothing wrong with that. It's easy to miss the building on the first pass, and we had to park a short distance down on Barbur. No biggy. I'd definitely go there again and would recommend it for a tasty seafood dinner that won't break the bank!
Not even if you paid me.. I've been going to this local dive because its close to home. The well drinks are poured strong to make up for the terrible quality. The owner is frequently there mistreating his hard working employees. I saw him take a bunch of shots and then smash a cute little Honda in the parking lot the other night, then drive off. So don't park next to his big brown pickup unless you've got full coverage. The food tastes good sometimes. Supposedly there is karaoke every night, but the owner tossed out one of the karaoke djs the other night (Saturday) and scared off all his customers, so I'm not sure if they've still got it going on. It makes me sad because his son and employees try really hard. I used to go here because I could have a drink as a single lady and not worry about my safety. It is like a dirty Cheers. But you won't find me supporting it anymore.
DISGUSTING AT EVERY LEVEL. There is nothing good to say about this restaurant. You have never seen a dirtier place to eat in your life and the waiter's hands were filthy too. Trying to play off the Crab Bowl name from the olden days, it is NOTHING like that restaurant. They claim they have copied dishes and sauces but they haven't. I called the Oregon Board of Health and they told me the restaurant refuses to cooperate with them. Save you money and run from this place before you catch something you will regret.
How do places like this stay in business?.
I went here a year ago and ate lunch in an dingy, almost empty dining room. The service was mind-numbingly slow and indifferent; salad was great but fish and chips were pretty meh. Their idea of "chips" are slightly burned, mushy potato slices with the skin. Yuck.
I just went back a couple of weeks ago to see if anything had changed, but I had practically the same experience I had the year before. There won't be a third time for me, thanks.
