As 100% expected, the cheesesteak was probably the most overrated gimmick part of my vacation to Philly. Skip it. Waste of time. This wasn't anything I couldn't get at any ballpark in the country. Not worth $9, and grumpy service, also.
The rude service still exists – I truly have never been so offended In an establishment. We were hlaf way through an ok lunch and had a toddler with us who was crying. (No more fun for us than anyone else, I assure you.) We were trying to settle him and were yelled at by a male staff to "GET OUT...YEA YOU, GET OUT." I felt like we were being treated like drunks in a bar instead of a grandmother and her family. We were not allowed to finish our meal and my daughter was brought to tears from embarassment. Philadelphia has a very poor representation here and left a bad taste in my mouth for the city.
Mediocre Food; Worst Service Ever Experienced – - Ordered ~ $50 worth of hoagies & cheesesteaks; counter workers very unfriendly
- Food not terrible, but I would have honestly preferred a Wawa hoagie at a fraction of the cost
- 35 min into our eating (with only one other table in the restaurant occupied), the older female waitress slid the table away from my brother and told us that we couldn't stay there forever
- Certainly won't be returning . . .
Good sandwiches, extremely rude staff – Campos does NOT accept credit cards. However, both this site and their website denotes credit cards accepted. When asked if I could pay via credit card, I was told - "well our menu doesn't say we accept credit cards, so we don't". The girl on the phone was very rude. This wasn't the first time. Every time I've called the staff has been extremely unkind.
Just about every other restaurant in Center City accepts credit cards and stands by their printed policy. There are many other restaurants in the city. Unfortunately due to the poor treatment I received from the staff, Campo's lost any of my future business.
Great chicken cheesesteak; ok service – This store has a great chicken cheesesteak, made with chunks of chicken breast - not the shredded chicken. I haven't tried their other sandwiches, but they all seem to look decent. In the 3-4 times I've been here, I've found the service to be just "okay." The girls behind the counter acted like it was a chore to give me ketchup packets, and an even bigger chore to give me more napkins. They just weren't very friendly. But overall, it's a decent place for a quick sandwich on my lunch break from work.
My Favorite Neighborhood Sandwich Shop !!! – I moved to Old City in 2001 and immediately began sampling every sandwich shop in the neighborhood to find the best place to eat. Campos won hands down! My wife, son and I have ordered food from Campos (everything from delicious chicken sandwiches to specialty salads, overstuffed hoagies and the excellent cheeseburger deluxe) about once a week for more than five years, and I can't remember ever being disappointed. For my money, Campo's is one of the best sandwich shops in the city. I have read some of the other posts complaining about bad or rude service, and honestly don't believe them. The countergirls, cooks, managers and delivery guys at Campo's are some of the best servicepeople I have ever encountered, and have been consistently pleasant, courteous and friendly as long as I've been going there. This really is where "the locals" go to eat, so you should too...
Great steak sandwiches...and mac n cheese!!! – I'm sorry that a few people feel they had a bad experience at Campos! My sister and I found everyone to be fabulous....staff and owner, Denise! The food was outstanding; steak sandwiches, potato salad, and the mac-n-cheese!! Denise also gave us some meatballs to try....right outta the oven ...like home! We are from CT, in Philly for a convention and jokingly, ventured out to find "THE cheese steak" place..and we found it!! We'll be back next time we are in philly!!
Sorry n y – Sounds like a real negative marketing post. Campo's happens to be one the friendliest family owned shops in Old City. I have never had a ketchup problem they give you all the packets you want. And their food is outstanding. If a new item is being tryed out before it hits the menu Mom is the first to give you a try.
Seems like you must have gotten mixed up.
I'm from NYC and these peole make rude into a new art form – Well I knew when the customer asked for ketchup and the girl behind the counter rolled her eyes and gave the lady a plastic container with literally a drop of ketchup in it I was in the wrong place to be. We kind of looked at each other and laughed and she asked for another one and got the requisite eye roll again - this time with a sigh. Bonus!!!
The girl behind the counter was downright rude to EVERYONE and they make you form a line in a direction away from the door so you have to pass everyone to get to the end of the line but it's unclear where the line starts. Then the girl behind the counter starts yelling at people because they are confused.
I stumbled on the place while looking for Sonny's which is half a block away and was recommended by the concierge in my hotel. We did an experiment and got one cheesesteak from campos and one from Sonnys. Forget about the rudeness - the Sonnys steak was MUCH MUCH better. I was going to try to order something else besides the steak sandwich but they were so rude that I just decided not to.
It was really bad. I would never go back.
Consistent food and service at a good prices – I am very surprised at the negative reviews of Campos! I have been a regular customer there since the beginning of the summer and have only come in contact with welcoming and helpful staff. The friendly atmosphere definitely keeps me coming back, in addition to the food that cant be beat. Ive tried almost everything on the menu and have yet to come across something I did not like. Additionally, the price is fair for the ingredients and location. Spend a little time there one day and youll see how the staff, including the owners, consistently interacts with their customers on a friendly basis.
As for the reviewer who complained she read the menu wrong and only received MORE THAN HALF of what she spent I say youre lucky to get what you did. It was your fault you misread and management isnt required to give you anything back.
