Lunch Menu is good – Lunch is good at this place. The Wonton soup is great. The #10 lunch menu Generals chicken is nice and spicy. You get your food in about 15 minutes at this place. I have been going there for over a year now. And the only thing I recommend is the lunch Menu and that’s it. The food is kind of oily and it will hit your stomach hard sometimes. It’s a hit and miss kind of thing when eating there. But I would say it is an average Chinese experience for cheap food for lunch. The staff is ok. They don’t make your experience any better there.

If they would put more money into the place and food and not into their pockets, it would be a great restaurant to eat at.

Worse Chinese Food Ever!! – If you want good or even mediocre Chinese food, do not waste your time or money at this dump. I do not know who the reviewer is kidding that gave this place 5 stars, but they must be related to the owners, that is the only thing that makes sense....Let me tell you a little story and you decide for yourself. My family and I decided to try some place different on Saturday evening this was July the 24th and we had been at the Boise Music Festival all afternoon and thought a nice Chinese dinner sounded great. My husband had heard of The Golden Star in the Idaho Statesman and it was voted one of the “Best of Boise” restaurants and he thought we should give it a try. So off we go, once we arrived I was a little suspicious as the place is very old and worn looking, but I am a firm believer that looks can be deceiving, so we sat down and waited for our orders to be taken, within 10 minutes of sitting down our orders were placed and we started a rousing game of 20 questions. We ordered dinners and appetizers and fully expected to have about 15 minutes before the first course even arrived. So imagine my surprise when not 10 minutes later our appetizers and dinners came out together. "Oh no", I said," that can not be good because unless the cooks are psychic, there is no way this is fresh".

Well, I am here to tell you, sometimes you can judge a book by it’s worn and dirty cover, the food was inedible, the egg rolls literally dripped grease and the meat in my daughter’s Mongolian beef was “well aged” to put it mildly. My husband actually did something we have NEVER done before; we asked to speak to a manager and asked to not pay for the Mongolian Beef and Egg Rolls as they were not touched beyond the cursory taste. To this suggestion we were summarily told to take a hike!! We were told we just did not understand the way Chinese food is done in Boise. What???

Needless to say, we immediately left this poor excuse for a restaurant and went downtown to Yen Ching’s and had real egg rolls and Mongolian beef. And yes, I have the receipt to prove we paid and left one restaurant and within an hour paid for virtually the same dishes at another restaurant for those of you who may be less than trusting by nature and think we may have just been looking for a freebie.....and no I do not own any stake in Yen Ching's....I am just a humble reviewer giving a first hand account of one of the worse dining experiences we have had.

To give this “restaurant” ,and I use that term loosely, even one star is one star too many. This is by far the worse food and facility and customer service I have encountered since we have been in Boise. And that is saying a lot!!

Shame on The Idaho Statesman for recommending this place, as it is obvious you did not actually do any due diligence before you recommended this disaster.

Good Asian choice – The Golden star has a long history. I have met people who have been returning for 30 years. This year they won the best of the best award published in the paper. They are busy despite little or no advertising. This speaks for itself. They do serve up a burger or steak for those picky eaters. My other Asian favorite is Confucius Restaurant on Fairview Ave. They are both reasonably priced and good.
