Awful food – Being Chinese American with extensive travel experience across the country, I've learned to expect little from Chinese restaurants outside of the few large metropolitan areas. After dining here, I really had to wonder how low the bar had to be set. My wife and I took my kid to U of I, and because she's still naive about Chinese dining in the more remote areas of the country, she pointed me to this restaurant which looks nice in a fairly classy downtown setting. Unfortunately, that is where the merit stops and demerit starts. We ordered a soup, two meat plates, and steamed rice. The only edible piece was the steam rice. The meats had obviously passed their time, and I did not have to taste them to tell - the appearance already broadcasted that they were from cows or chickens slaughtered before the last Republican was elected to the White House.

As my wife cannot stand a day without any Chinese food, we ended up having to wash down the bad taste at the Chinese buffett place across the town. That one turned out to be OK. Back where we live, I would have never expected her to set foot in a buffett place but she had to do it to unwide her stomach.

I've taken pain to find Chinese food in the 37 out of the 50 states travelled; I've even eaten Chinese in the middle of Germany and Ireland, places where such delicacy is not expected. I can honestly say this is the second worst Chinese restaurant I've dined at. The worst one? I think it was in Winter Park or Breckenridge in Colorado. It was so traumatic I erased much of that memorable moment.

Friendly service, but terrible, terrible food. – This was honestly the worst food I have ever been served. My wife and I were visiting Moscow on business in November and stopped by for some late-night Chinese. We didn't expect much from an old Chinese restaurant in the middle of nowhere, but the food quality at Old Peking was exceptionally awful. The service was friendly, but the food quality sinks the entire restaurant.

To begin with, the "Egg Drop Soup" tasted exactly like alphabet soup. There was scant little egg, only canned, square-cut carrots and old, blueish-gray [what I assumed to be] peas. It was disgusting. We set the soup aside hoping the entree would recompense our foul experience with the appetizer.

The main entree was indeed a shock. I ordered sweet-and-sour chicken with fried rice and my wife ordered a chicken with peppers entree of some sort. At first appearance the food looked safe enough to eat. I tried the heavily-breaded chicken to find that each piece consisted of about 90% fat and ancillary chicken by-product, and 10% white meat. Undaunted in my quest to find something edible on my plate, I cut the breading away from each peace to find a similar composition throughout. When all was said and done, I had a huge pile of chicken breading covered in a thick, orange paste on my plate, and an empty stomach. When I ordered sweet-and-sour chicken, I assumed the main ingredient was chicken, not fat and deep-fried batter. My wife?s chicken was identical. The rice was bland and tossed with the same assortment of canned carrots and blueish-gray peas found in the soup.

I could go on, but I think it suffices to say that Old Peking serves the worst Chinese food I have ever encountered, and I?ve had a lot of bad Chinese.

The atmosphere and service were fine, but if you want palatable food, look elsewhere.
