Ice house turned mall keeps the patrons coming. – In Short
Ice was manufactured on the premises of the Ice House Mall until as recently as 1974. Before the building was owned by the Jefferson Ice Company, it housed the Bowman Dairy and farmers would bring cans to town by wagon, pour milk into vats and wait while the cans were washed. Barrington businessmen turned the building into a mall in 1975. In 1978, about 400 people watched as the 62-year-old North Western train station was moved through town and connected to the old icehouse. Shopping inside Barrington Ice House Mall is a peaceful experience, also reminiscent of a simpler time -- no huge crowds or long lines and very few stores. Exposed wooden beams and brick of the original icehouse create a rustic atmosphere.
