Set the bar REALLY high! – My boyfriend and I have been coming here for years. It's where I first learned how to use chopsticks! They gave me "training" ones my first visit! LOL!
It has always been the same staff, they know our name, we know theirs and they make it so you feel you are among friends. I have never had low quality sushi here. Origamis 'worst' sushi day is the 'best' sushi day for most other places. So having said that, they set the bar really high so I always compare when I eat sushi elsewhere (don't know why I bother!). And actually, the price is pretty competitive. The fatty salmon is pure magic. Tastes so buttery and delicious! Worth every penny! I take everyone I know there!
Best place ever! – I have been going to Origami for over 2 years now, almost weekly. I am always more than satisfied with the service, the food and the atmosphere.
When you eat at a traditional Japanese rest. you need to have patience. This is not fast food- if you want that- there is a McD's in the parking lot. If they are busy- be prepared to wait for your food like an adult- as it is all made fresh, by hand and in the order the tickets are submitted. Only an idiot would run into a real restaurant starving and expect to be served their food in 10 minutes. Some items take longer to prepare, and they bring items as they are ready, as is proper.
The food is always delicious, and very fresh. I have eaten there over 100 times at this point, so obviously I think it is great. The prices are lower than most sushi and Japanese places in the Austin area, and I am so happy to say that when I order a vegetarian roll- it does not taste like fish. (Unfortunately I have been to many other sushi places that do not understand that cross-contamination is a bad thing. ) I have always enjoyed every bite at Origami!
They keep the place very clean, and the staff does their very best to keep up with all of the tables. They are usually pretty busy, and always get everyone what they need as soon as possible.
By far this is one of the top 5 restaurants I have eaten at in my life.
Best Sushi in Austin Area – I've been eating here for the last 6 years and the quality of the food has always been excellent. Whether it's from the kitchen or the sushi bar, it is regularly better than other sushi bars like Musashino and Uchi.
I see other reviewers complaining about the serving size/price or an automatic tip. I've eaten at many sushi bars all over the Austin area as well as other states. The prices at Origami have always been quite reasonable, and the serving portions the same as just about every other place I've been to, larger than most in fact.
With regard to the automatic tip poilcy. There may be one for large parties, but I'd say 99% of the places I've eaten say "Automatic gratuity on parties of 6 or larger." If that's the case here I wouldn't be shocked as some other people seem to be.
In short, go there, tell em Jonny sent you and say hi if I'm there, It's a good bet I will be, it's just that good.
Best Sushi in Round Rock – Dont let the strip mall location turn you off, this is one of the best sushi restaurants in the Austin area. I have eaten here many times over the last few years and rarely have I not been happy with the experience. The sushi is fresh and the decor is very warm. Seating at the bar, regular tables or on the floor if you want the traditional feel. Good selection of rolls if thats your thing. For those that want cheap, try going for lunch.
this is the real thing, go here! – recently told to check out this place in (of all places) round rock. this is THE BEST SUSHI outside of sticking your face in the ocean. i travel to japan frequently for business and can say this place must have smuggled back some talent. they have people who actually speak japanese and know the food! i found the prices were comparable to others in austin. the service was good and very friendly. went to another place last week called beluga just to see if this round rock thing was a fluke...goto origami.
Go to Beluga instead – Overpriced and the service is terrible! I've been twice and each time my husband got his food about 15 minutes before I got mine. The waitresses completely ignored us. They didn't even bring us water for about 5 minutes (we had to remind her 3 times). The sushi is just OK but not worth how long you have to wait for it.
Hypocrisy at its finest – It seems ironic to me that they they charge an automatic 15%-20% tip to every table.
I am a server myself, and a while back I waited on the head chef and the owner. They sat at my table for over 2.5 hours working on their new happy hour menu. They ordered drinks, and sent them back for ridiculous reasons. The chef sent his margarita back because it was made with sweet and sour. Well, thats what most margaritas are made of. In any event, he did't like it - no big deal. I excused his behavior. I knew that since they were in the service industry and there was nothing wrong with the service, they would leave a decent tip.
I was wrong. The chef and the owner tipped me LESS than 15%. Even 15% would have been unacceptable considering they sat there for almost three hours!
Based on this alone, I refuse to give them any of my money. I encourage anyone to do the same. To FORCE every guest in your restaurant to tip whether or not they received good service is ridiculous, but then to go out and not adhere to the same standards is an outrage.
Going Down Hill Fast... – I used to love this place and the owners, but they seem to have forgotten that it is loyal customers who pay for them to be in business.
We have always prided ourselves on tipping well 20% to 30% when we could afford it, but right now money is tight for everybody, and their automated tip policy seems no different than if they mugged us. Their food and portions are not that good... and their customer service has really suffered - this place does not in any way qualify for a 15% - 20% surcharge to their already expensive pricing.
With gas at almost $4.00 per gallon we have a lot less money available to spend on dining out... and when we choose to spend any extra money we have at a favorite restaurant, AND we bring friends to spend their money, it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth to receive our bill with a 15% - 20% AUTOMATIC surcharge (automatic tip) because I brought friends and referred people to this place.
In my business, I reward customers for referring business, Origami penalizes you... They have lost our business - I had always enjoyed the owners, but not any longer. We feel disrespected and I think as you notice the increasing number of 1 to 2 star ratings for this place, they seriously need to make some adjustments before it is too late.
good food but poor service – this place has Japanese owner and I am Japanese, I used to love the place until recently I went there and they wrote tip themself and another time, last time I go there, we were enjoying our conversation with friends who usually don't go out much, we had lot to talk about...and then they could say something but large group came in and they wanted to kick us out...so they brought check and service stopped and I could hear what they are saying and understanding since I am Japanese..owner looked at me like why are you here still...and that was really rude...and I had to say to my dear friends that they are trying to kick us out by looking at me and no more service...so I had it with that restaurant...I rather go to Tokyo Stake House as that matter...they have much well mannered people work there...!!!!!!!!
Excellent Sushi in Round Rock – Great atmosphere, authentic Japanese hospitality, delicious food, reasonable prices.
I was in absolute heaven over the salmon, fatty tuna, amberjack, and tempura shrimp rolls.
Mmm. Mmm. Good.
P.S. They have real wasabi too. Who knew? All this time I thought mustard and horseradish with green food coloring was what it was all about.
