not serving manners – For a restaurant trying to not lose their location I would think the staff and owner would have better manners. I have been to the Choo Choo twice for friends kids birthdays. I left both times feeling stressed and terribly uncomfortable due to the blond female owner's attitude. The self proclaimed "nicest person" was rude and obviously has forgotten the old adage of "the customer is always right".
The first time was two years ago and the service was slow, the kids anxious, and other tables keep being served before us even though they sat after. After bringing this to their attention they were curt and dismissive and then the owner came out and basically told us to leave if we were not happy. No Apology!
I was back today for a 3rd birthday. First the servers keep making faces, they took forever to respond to additional needs(a fork and knive please!).They kept trying to take the food before the kids were done eating and then after twenty minutes the owner came over and told us that we had to leave the table since we had exceeded our 30 minute limit?!. When my guest questioned her, again no humor, no apology just rudeness. The kids had just received their birthday cupcakes and there was only one party waiting at the door, but counter seats were open.
The women was threatening and seemed to forget that at that moment we were her CUSTOMERS. The extra kick in the butt was they just added gratuity to the bill. None was deserved.
Great for Nostalgia – I have great memories of this place and now look at it from a different perspective. I am glad it still serves burgers on a train but I wish it would relocate to a safer area. I see kids standing outside and while there is a chained rail of sorts, the sidewalk is so close to the street where turning cars race by. I know they are fighting a move but I think a move will be for the best. I wish them luck. The food is still great even if it is just burgerfare.
Great little no frills place for kids! – Yes its basic burgers/dogs, but we drove here all the way from Berwyn to have our son watch the trains simply deliver the orders! There was pleanty of staff, it was older, yes, but checkout their website, it was clean and even had a neat little free train for the kids to ride in while u wait for your food!
Charming! – This is a place for people who love burger/diner food and TRAINS! The building is clean and vintage. I'm not sure the 2 negative reviewers went to the same place I did. My burger was cooked just as I asked, it was a tasty meaty real cheese kind of burger. The fact it was delivered on a train was a hoot! The owner was charming, and kept the large groups of children entertained (no easy task).
What a cool restaurant!!!! – I was so happy that I came across this cool little restaurant! I enjoyed having a real burger and milkshake. Very good. The train was fun. If you have kids take them here. If you are a kid at heart you will enjoy it too. I met the owner. She was also great. The staff was friendly. Yes, the building is old. Yes, the whole place looks like it is something from the 50's. How cool. If you are ever near Des Plaines, I would highly recommend it! Worth the stop.
Tearing down "slum" restaurants! – This is the WORST restauran tI have ever been to! It is old and run down! There was no help, just an old bleach blonde lady flipping hamburgers! They think this is a creative thing.....WRONG! This is a delapated building and an old , old idea from the 50's. Get with it and get into the 21st century! Only very little kids would not know any better.I got sick looking at everything and even more sick eating the stuff!!!!!!
User review by fatanddelicious – This restaurant is in a run-down part of Des Plaines serving only "kiddie" food on old mini train cars. The restaurant looks like a old laundramat from the outside! There appears to be minimal help and you can get a better hamburger at McDonald's. I would rate this a 3 out of 10. Go only if you are desperate or blind.
Novelty Dining – My dad took me here in the 1960's and it hasn't changed a bit. The highlight of this restaurant is food delivery by a toy train which circles the perimeter of the restaurant stopping at each booth. Hot dogs, burgers, fries. Food not memorable but my kids love the place!
