The Scene
Janina's serves as an informal gathering spot for Houston's Polish community and on weekends, you can expect to hear people speaking Polish as much as English. The dining room is a modest affair--two booths and a dozen tables--but a pair of mannequins outfitted in festive traditional garb provides a colorful salute to the homeland.
The Food
Hearty, authentic Polish fare is the specialty. Owner-cook Janina Martula prepares food just as she once did at restaurants in her native Poland. Savory meat- or potato-stuffed pastries (pierogies) get you started. Maybe a bowl of nicely sour borscht next? Definitely move on to the stuffed cabbage (golbaki) with a side order of crisp potato pancakes. Finish with the crepe-like blintzes filled with sweet farmer's cheese. Big-time eaters should tackle the combination platter, which includes everything in the place except the neon beer signs.
