EXCEPTIONAL! – In February of 2006, I made my first visit to Hearts and Hands when I was just shy of five months pregnant. My husband and I were looking for a center in which we could feel comfortable with. Hard enough as it is to think of not being with your child 24/7, we had to make the choice of putting some of the care to our unborn child into someone else’s hands. With that in mind we wanted a place that felt like home. Upon walking into Hearts and Hands, I was greeted with a warm and friendly welcome from the staff members. They say first impressions can last a lifetime and for me that first impression had melted my heart. Their philosophy is that each infant is different and therefore their schedules/routines vary. When a baby is hungry, they eat, if tired, they sleep. Many other centers put infants on the schedule that is easier for the entire "group", which is great when they reach a certain age, but for an infant it is necessary for “them” to be in charge. It was important for us to have a home away from home for God’s child in which I was carrying and this seemed like the place that could carry this out. Now, with two children attending Hearts and Hands and three years later, we look back on that very important decision and thank the Lord for guiding us to this child development center. They truly care for and develop a childs social, cognitive, and spiritual development, while keeping in mind their individual temperment and specific needs.
You will want your children here!! – I have been an elementary public school teacher for 11 years and currently have three young children, ages 2, 4 and 5 who attend Hearts & Hands. My background (experiences and degrees) is in early education and I am so impressed with the curriculum and how the staff follows developmentally appropriate practices. I have seen my children blossom at Hearts and Hands.
As a third grade teacher, I am seeing more and more children that do not have some of the basic building blocks of social skills nor have they developed their fine motor coordination. Many children cannot use scissors and others have difficulty expressing themselves in an appropriate way. Over the years the trend has been to teach more curriculum at younger ages. The problem with this is that children are not developmentally ready. It’s like trying to teach a 3 month old to walk. It cannot be done, because developmentally they are not ready. Hearts and Hands understands this. Their focus is on teaching children, not merely on curriculum -which is a refreshing change. They take the children where they are and guide them to the next developmental stage.
I also think that there is great communication with parents, using newsletters (complete with pictures of the children learning), and lesson plans. Weekly parent letters specifically tell me what my older children did for the week and I receive daily records of what my youngest son does each day- I know who he played with, what he did, when his diaper was changed, his moods, his naps, his experiences... etc. I am also impressed with the different activities that are planned to teach children about community service. The upcoming "Trike-a-thon" to raise money for St. Jude is just one example. My thanks go to the wonderful staff at Hearts & Hands for caring for my children. I could not be more impressed with my experiences thus far and feel blessed to have them as (it feels) an extended part of my family.
